Working in the Rail Safety Directorate at Transport Canada, Safety Management Systems Auditors are responsible for performing oversight on railways through railway safety management systems audits and working with railway stakeholders in promoting compliance with regulatory requirements and in identifying and reducing risks.
The activities of this position require occasional travel within Canada to conduct auditing activities. Most tasks will be performed in a typical office environment. Some activities may be performed in various indoor and outdoor environments and under varying weather conditions.
The position to be staffed is located at in the National Capital Region. The successful candidate will be required to work on-site at a government work site a minimum 40% of their working hours (This is subject to change). Remote work must be performed in Canada.
What is your role?
• Conducting audits on railway safety management systems of railways operating in Canada;
• Participating in the design, development, and implementation of the railway safety management system regulatory compliance program;
• Providing subject matter expert advice on audit methodologies, standards, policies, procedures and best practices to promote continual improvements to the audit program;
• Conducting peer reviews of draft audit reports from across the country to promote consistency;
• Developing strategies and processes to monitor the adoption by the rail industry of SMS approaches and practices;
• Providing expert subject matter advice, guidance, and interpretation to internal and external stakeholders, including the coaching and mentoring of regional colleagues; and
• Performing safety data analyses in support of the Rail Safety Program.

Education:
ED1: Graduation with a degree or diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution (minimum of two years) or an acceptable combination of education and, training and/or experience.
Note: Acceptable combination is defined as a secondary school diploma and at least two (2) years of experience performing duties directly related to the position
Experience:
EX1: Significant* experience in planning, preparing and writing detailed reports such as research papers, audit reports and briefing notes for management.
EX2: Experience interpreting and applying complex** policies and procedures.
EX3: Experience in establishing relationships, coordinating, and liaising with internal and external stakeholders.
*Significant is defined as at least two (2) years of cumulative experience that is a core part of work responsibilities.
**Complex is defined as including at least two (2) of the following characteristics:

Experience:
