As part of its mandate under the Oceans Act, the Marine Planning and Conservation Program supports the management and conservation of Canada’s oceans and coastal areas through a number of related programs. To accomplish this, our team works with partners within Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), other federal departments, provincial departments, First Nations and Indigenous groups, marine industries and other stakeholders.
The Marine Planning and Conservation Program is comprised of the following related programs:
➊ Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) - MSP is a process that strives to ensure that marine spaces are collaboratively managed and used to support social, cultural, economic and conservation goals.
➋ Marine Conservation Planning - The Government of Canada is continuing to advance the national Marine Conservation Targets to support its international spatial conservation commitments to protect 25% of Canada’s marine environments by 2025 and 30% by 2030, and to enhance the management, monitoring and stewardship of existing Marine Protected Areas and Marine Refuges. In addition, DFO is supporting First Nations and Indigenous communities in the development of Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas (IPCAs) in coastal and marine areas.
➌ Marine Environmental Quality (MEQ) - The MEQ Program undertakes a range of activities to better understand and address issues affecting the quality of the marine environment. As part of this, DFO and its partners have placed a priority on the understanding and management of noise and its effects in the marine environment, as well as other stressors, such as marine contaminants and marine debris and plastics.
