As a Subdivision Head (SDH) within the Geological Survey of Canada, you will plan and manage the financial and human resources and scientific activities of the organization. The SDH contributes to the development and refinement of the research programs and other initiatives by participating in strategic program planning and objective setting, reviewing trends in relevant science activities in other government departments, academia, and in the private sector; analyzing the current science policy directions as are relevant to the needs of the Canadian public. In addition, the SDH will liaise, consult with and advise other government agencies, Indigenous organizations and groups, industry, academic institutions, geoscience agencies, international agencies in areas of programming, management or administrative issues.

The intent of this selection process is to staff one (1) indeterminate SE-REM-02 position; Subdivision Head, Marine Environment Geoscience, Geological Survey of Canada, Atlantic.
A pool of (fully or partially qualified) candidates may be established through this process to staff identical or similar positions at the SE-REM-02 group and level at Natural Resources Canada, with various tenures (determinate period or permanent), various language requirements, various security requirements (Reliability status or Secret clearance), various conditions of employment, and for various locations.

► Graduation with an acceptable doctoral degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a field of the natural sciences related to the duties of the position, or the employer-approved alternative.
• NOTE: The employer-approved alternative is an acceptable master's or bachelor's degree coupled with acceptable research, training and experience. The degree must be from a recognized post-secondary institution and in scientific fields and specialties related to the duties of the position. The training and experience must clearly demonstrate the ability to do research of doctoral degree calibre.
► Extensive experience* in managing a range of scientific research activities related to geoscience or geology or other scientific fields relevant to the position.
► Experience in managing scientific or technical human** resources.
► Experience in managing and planning financial*** resources allocated to research projects.
► Experience in providing science advice, recommendations, writing and presenting briefing material to senior management (Director level and above).
► Experience providing information in area of expertise to clients, internal and external to government.
* Extensive experience is defined as three (3) years of experience acquired in the last seven (7) years.
** Applicants must clearly demonstrate that they have human resources management experience - defined as: having supervised staff, assigned work, managed and assessed performance and development. This experience is acquired within the last five (5) years for a period of at least one (1) year.
*** Applicants must show evidence of financial management experience - defined as: managing and being accountable for a budget. This experience is acquired within the last five (5) years for a period of at least one (1) year
► Doctoral degree in a field of marine geosciences.
► Experience in planning, managing or conducting research studies in marine geoscience.
► Experience leading or organizing ship-based marine research activities.
► Willing and able to travel within Canada and abroad.
