Duties

Installs, calibrates, and operates, radio-frequency (RF) laboratory equipment for the measurement of electromagnetic fields, including antennas, transmitters, receivers, amplifiers, and other related components.
Upgrades or enhances existing RF tools and facilities, integrates additional features, and implements software/firmware updates.
Establishes, and ensures that safety protocols are followed.
Performs routine maintenance tasks on RF equipment, such as cleaning, inspection, and replacing components as needed. Troubleshoots and diagnoses equipment malfunctions or performance issues and carries out repairs or coordinates with specialized service personnel.
Maintains detailed records of equipment and facility maintenance, repair activities, and test results.
Analyzes information and test results of RF devices in order to assess their potential health impact. Verifies compliance of radio and microwave frequency devices with applicable regulations.
Prepares technical reports and presents findings to supervisors and other stakeholders.
Provides regulatory, scientific and health and safety advice concerning EMF radiation to management, other government partners and external stakeholders.
Develops and writes documents that explain regulatory requirements and inspection procedures to stakeholders, including federal/provincial/territorial agencies, manufacturers, importers and distributors.
Takes part in the design of experiments and performs EMF bio-effect studies, conducts and evaluates tests, performs calculations, investigates methodologies related to area of specialization, including those pertaining to collaborative studies.
Maintains a knowledge base of new technology, theories and methodologies, practices, approaches and procedures for radio and microwave frequency safety and inspection.
Attends seminars and conferences, engages in professional development activities, and keeps up with the latest developments in relevant industry trends.
Participates in quality control procedures and maintenance of laboratory and/or field study operations according to recognized national and international standards.
Contributes to the development of safety programs, budgets, personnel and equipment requirements and strategies pertinent to risk management for non-ionizing radiation safety.
Provides administrative support including documentation related to project proposals, assets, purchasing, spending, contracts, infrastructure and staffing.

Intent of the process

Intent to staff an indeterminate TI-06. A pool of qualified candidates (fully assessed or partially assessed) will be established and may be used to staff similar positions at this group and level. This process may be used to staff various positions and tenures (including but not limited to Term and Indeterminate appointments, Internal assignments, Secondments, Deployments, Acting appointments) within Health Canada.

Education
Successful completion of secondary school AND completion of an acceptable training program in electronic technology OR an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.

Degree equivalency

Experience
Significant* experience performing measurements and characterization of radiofrequency electromagnetic radiation from various sources such as: microwave circuits, power amplifiers, antennas.
Significant* experience in the operation, and maintenance of radiofrequency radiation laboratory equipment such as VNAs, spectrum analysers and power amplifiers.
Experience planning, designing, conducting, or analysing results from RF laboratory tests.
Experience developing technical reports and scientific documents.

* Significant is defined as the depth and breadth of experience normally associated with the performance of the duties for a period of 2 years.

Asset Experience
Experience evaluating software code using computer software such as MATLAB or Python, or any other integrated development environment.
Experience researching scientific literature, conducting surveys and developing technical files would be an asset.
