Duties

Research Objectives:
• Documenting and understanding changes in the Arctic ocean and its sea-ice cover, as they are occurring.
• Investigating possible linkages between change in the Arctic marine ecosystem and change in the ocean and its ice cover.
• Collaborating with other oceanographers in DFO’s Ecosystem and Ocean Science Branch to address priority issues.
• Anticipating future problems in the health of the ocean and their negative impacts.
• Building and maintaining expertise in polar ocean science so as to provide sound and timely advice to Government when called upon to do so.
• Representing the Fisheries and Oceans Pacific Region as a physical oceanographer in annual discussions concerning the State Of The Ocean.
• Providing scientific guidance in determining governance and strategy for oceans management, upon request from DFO’s Canadian Science Advisory Secretariat.

Additional information:
The successful candidate will join the long-standing Arctic group at Institute of Ocean Sciences to deliver physical oceanographic programs in partnership with national and international collaborators.

The intent of this process is to immediately staff one indeterminate position. A pool of qualified persons resulting from this process may also be used to fill similar positions of various tenures within Fisheries and Oceans Canada.

Education:
Graduation with an acceptable doctoral (PhD) degree from a recognized university in a field of the natural sciences related to the duties of the position. For completed doctoral degrees awaiting only conferral, conferral must be obtained within 3 months after the closing date of this job posting.

Degree equivalency

Experience:
Experience in conducting physical oceanographic research.
Experience planning and leading oceanographic expeditions.
Experience in analysis and interpretation of oceanographic data.
Experience in presenting research findings at scientific workshops or meetings.
Experience in authoring scientific publications in international peer reviewed journals with at least three papers on physical oceanography and at least one of which is a first author publication.

Knowledge of physical oceanographic and cryospheric processes of the Arctic Ocean.
Knowledge of the role of atmospheric and oceanic processes in determining the ocean and sea-ice climate of polar regions.
Knowledge of how oceanographic and sea-ice processes maintain diverse habitat for marine life of polar continental shelves and coastal areas.

Asset Education:
Graduation with a doctoral (PhD) degree from a recognised university with specialization in physical oceanography.

Degree equivalency

Asset Experience:
Experience in authoring scientific publications in international peer reviewed journals with at least three papers on Arctic physical oceanography and at least one of which is a first author publication.
Experience participating in Arctic field programs.
Experience in conducting research at sea (with at least 7 days at sea).
Experience with modern methods and technologies for ocean and sea-ice measurements in polar seas.
Experience in the analysis of time series data.
Experience using statistical and analytical methods.
Experience in conducting both independent and collaborative research.
Experience writing successful proposals to funding agencies.

SE-RES-2: A research scientist who is recognized by peers as knowledgeable in an area of specialty, either has worked in and led a small project team of scientific/technical personnel or carried out individual in-depth inquiries to support the delivery of the sectoral or departmental mandate.

SE-RES-3: A research scientist who is recognized by peers as a national expert in an area of specialty, and has led a team of scientific and technical personnel or carried out in-depth inquiries to successfully deliver on the immediate, or contribute to intermediate and long-term, outcomes of the sector/department.

SE-RES-4: A research scientist who is recognized as an authority in broad areas of specialty and who has strategically conceptualized the course of research activity within the sector/department leading to the achievement of the intermediate, and contributing to the long-term, outcomes of the sector/department.

SE-RES-5: A research scientist who is recognized as an authority and visionary in broad areas of specialty who has strategically integrated leading edge scientific and technical objectives into programs within the sector/department as required, having the desired long-term impact on organizational priorities and the future directions of research within and outside the department.
