Duties

Did you know that the RCMP employs technical staff responsible for developing and maintaining their own Land Mobile Radio network? This role encompasses a variety of duties that takes the Technologists to the highest mountain peaks in BC, to the front lines supporting our officers. Team Leaders provide advisory services and functional leadership to project teams composed of technical staff and contractors on technological issues affecting the development, implementation, integration or maintenance of IT infrastructure and operations as well as electronics infrastructure, and manages funds allocated to projects.

Some typical duties the Team Leader is responsible for:
• Support police 2-way radio communication maintenance, configuration, and life cycle management
• Coordinating mountain-top radio repeater station maintenance, configuration, and life-cycle management
• Project management and planning for various IT and radio infrastructure related projects
• Communications coordination, planning and support for police operations and high security events (eg. Olympics, national leaders’ summit)
• Providing functional leadership to teams supporting operational communications infrastructure.

Work environment

The RCMP is seeking talented candidates with proven ability to work in this wide range of IT and electronics infrastructure for the Radio Technology Program in E Division (BC).

This position primarily provides services to areas within the Lower Mainland portion of BC. Team leads will work in multiple physical environments ranging from office/lab environments to detachment visits and remote mountain tops with exposures to all weather conditions when required. Travel is typically via vehicle or helicopter and occasional overnight trips / deployments are expected. Core business hours are Monday through Friday between the hours of 0800 and 1600. Willingness to work overtime, provide after-hours support and be on call are an operational requirement and compensation is provided. Within operational requirements, there may be flexibility to work variable start times or completing hours of work over 9 days instead of 10 days in a two-week period.

The anticipated intent/result of this process is to indeterminately staff (on a full-time basis) one position.

A qualified pool will be established and may be used for future permanent or temporary vacancies.

Should a Civilian Member (CM) be found qualified and selected for appointment, the appointment will not result in a change of status to the Public Service (PS) category for the CM.

Graduation from a two-year program of study from a recognized post-secondary institution with acceptable specialization in computer science, information technology, information management or another specialty relevant to the position to be staffed OR an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.

Indeterminate incumbents in the IT group on December 9, 2021 who do not possess the education prescribed above, are deemed to meet the minimum education standard based on their education, training and/or experience. • Significant** experience* in implementing and maintaining remote radio communication facilities and technologies.

**Recent experience is defined as the experience normally acquired within the last five (5) years.
*** Significant experience is defined as depth and breadth of experience normally associated with the performance of those duties on a regular basis for a minimum of two (2) years.

Conditions of employment

All applicants for positions within the Royal Canadian Mounted Police will be subject to a thorough security clearance process which includes an interview wherein questions may include (but not limited to), reference checks, previous employment, on-line activities, credit checks, alcohol and/or drug use.

• Possession of a valid Class 5 Driver’s license.
• Must be willing and able to travel throughout service area (i.e. BC) occasionally for extended periods, including travel via helicopter or fixed wing aircraft.
• Must be willing and able to work extended hours, unscheduled overnight travel and/or adjust work schedule, with little or no notice, to meet operational requirements.
• Must be willing and able to provide after-hours support via operational availability (on call).
• Must be willing and have mobility to the extent of crawling and working in confined areas of vehicles/aircraft/ships to install radio, electrical and antenna equipment.
• Must be able to lift heavy or awkward items like radios and batteries, up to 90 lb.
• Must be willing and able to perform work duties in inclement and uncomfortable weather conditions such as pouring rain and extreme cold (-40 Celsius).
• Must be willing and able to provide technical support to front line policing operations in the field.
• Must conform to standards set for travel on RCMP PC-12 Pilatus Aircraft, including maximum passenger weight restriction of 400lbs (which includes clothing and equipment).

Once established, the qualified pool will be valid for a period of 12 months and may be extended.
