Intent of the process

A pool of qualified candidates will be established and used to staff several physical scientist specialist positions at the Canadian Centre for Climate Modelling and Analysis (CCCma) and the Research Section on Atmospheric Numerical Prediction (RPN-A), whose security profiles, language requirements, and length of employment may vary depending on the position being filled and in various locations within Environment and Climate Change Canada in Canada.

EDUCATION:
(ED1) Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution, with an acceptable specialization in physics, geology, chemistry or in some other science relevant to the position.

1.The courses for the specialization must be acceptable and must have been taken at a recognized post-secondary institution, but not necessarily within a degree program in the required specialization.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE:
(EX1) Significant* Experience writing and maintaining scientific code in R or FORTRAN or Python, in a UNIX/Linux environment.

(EX2) Experience in collaborative software development.

(EX3) Experience in the use of numerical scientific models (e.g., atmospheric models, Earth system models, or similar).

(EX4) Experience in running software on High Performance Computing Platforms.

* Significant experience means that which is an integral part of the duties of the candidate over a period of at least two (2) years.

(K1) Knowledge of the fundamentals related to the development, execution and analysis of complex physical science models on high-performance computing platforms.
(K2) Knowledge of compiled (Fortran and/or C) and scripting languages (Python and/or Bash), as used to execute, sequence or analyse complex scientific model(s).

ABILITIES:
(A1) Ability to process scientific data and analyze large datasets using appropriate methods, tools and platforms.
(A2) Ability to develop, execute and analyze complex physical science models on high-performance computing platforms.
(A3) Ability to communicate orally and in writing.

EDUCATION:
Graduation with a post-graduate degree from a recognized post-secondary institution, with an acceptable specialization in physics, geology, chemistry or in some other science relevant to the position, such as atmospheric sciences, computer science or engineering.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE:
(AEX1) Experience with job sequencing systems (i.e. cylc) and job schedulers (i.e. PBS, SLURM).

(AEX2) Experience with version control systems (preferably git).

(AEX3) Experience in applying deep learning methods to very large datasets.

(AEX4) Experience in developing and using unit tests and continuous integration (CI) systems.

(AEX5) Experience in the development, application and analysis of ocean, atmosphere or Earth system models.

KNOWLEDGE:
(K1) Knowledge of modern software development practices.
(K2) Knowledge of tape archive systems.
(K3) Knowledge of cloud computing systems.
(K4) Knowledge of database systems.
(K5) Knowledge of coupled Earth System Models, including model components, community coupling systems and remapping tools.
(K6) Knowledge of coding algorithms for Graphics Processing Units.
