Duties

As part of M.Sc. project:
-Examine the literature related to the gaps around the potential impact of BMPs in Alberta on soil hydrology.
-Determine how BMPs on producers’ farms might impact the soil hydrology at the farm scale.
-Determining the interaction between soil hydrology, carbon sequestration, and GHG reduction across a number BMPs in Alberta
-Installation of field monitoring, collection of samples and analysis of samples in the lab is required
-Improve adoption of BMPs through demonstration of findings around co-benefits related to soil hydrologic (hydraulic) properties.

Work environment

The Lethbridge Research & Development Centre (LeRDC) is one of the largest within Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's national network. The Centre has 46 Research Scientists plus support staff. Research is grouped in the areas of environmental health, bioproducts and bioprocesses, sustainable production systems and food safety and nutrition. LeRDC has excellent laboratory and farm facilities, including a research feedlot.

The successful candidate will join a dynamic research team in the soil conservation and land resilience laboratory which collaborates with researchers in and soil science, agronomy and livestock science. The candidate will work under the supervision of Dr. Henry Wai Chau.

Education:
Currently enrolled or will be enrolled by the date of appointment in a Masters program at an accredited post-secondary university in the following specialization: Soil Science.

Note: Must be currently recognized as having full-time student status in the academic institution in which you are presently enrolled, pending approval of acceptance or in the process of submitting your application. (Proof of enrollment will be required prior to start date) and must be returning to full-time studies for your next academic term.

Degree equivalency

Experience:
Experience* with meeting and communicating with producers and external stakeholders.
Experience* in laboratory and field techniques and procedures related to soil, water, and plant analyses.
Experience* in collecting, tabulating, analyzing and reporting scientific data to stakeholders.

* In the context of student recruitment in the federal public service, experience can be acquired through studies, work experience and volunteer activities.
