Duties

A Statistics Survey Operations Interviewer conducts survey collection activities with the public, this includes using a variety of methods to obtain statistical information as required by the Statistics Act.

Interviewers:
- will organize and complete work assignments as per instructions.
- use a variety of equipment and materials associated with the gathering of survey information.
- will be responsible for developing and maintaining productive and harmonious relationships with respondents (households, persons, businesses, institutions, and farm operators) of assigned surveys.
- contact respondents either by phone or in-person, conduct interviews and obtain completed questionnaires.

Work environment

Statistics Canada hires interviewers as needed for jobs up to 35 hours a week to conduct a variety of surveys. Interviewers may work from home or on-site based on operational requirements. They primarily conduct phone interviews or travel to conduct interviews in the respondent's home.

Intent of the process

Statistics Canada is establishing national inventory for three regions within Canada to facilitate recruitment when there is a need to do so. The national inventory is used to fill positions in any province or territory across Canada.

Inventories for Northwest and Northeast regions are also available. The Northwest regions are Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut. The Northeast regions are Nunavik (northern Quebec) and Nunatsiavut (northern Newfoundland). The inventories are specific to these regions and hiring priority is placed on currently living in those regions.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

EDUCATION

Successful completion of secondary school according to provincial standards or approved alternatives. An acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience may be accepted.

Degree equivalency

Experience performing computer functions (opening /closing and locating software programs and files; utilizing word processing, email and spreadsheet software, etc.)

Information on employment equity

Statistics Survey Operations (SSO) is Statistics Canada’s survey collection operation. SSO employs thousands of Interviewers across Canada. SSO Interviewers conduct over 2.5 million interviews with Canadians every year. The success of Statistics Canada’s surveys is due in large part to the trust Canadians place in our Interviewers. Statistics Canada’s commitment to Canadians’ confidentiality and privacy is central to the work we do.

SSO is not subject to the Public Service Employment Act (PSEA) and handles its own recruitment. For this reason, SSO uses a different staffing process and its terminology may not be the same.

Candidates must clearly demonstrate how they meet each of the essential education and experience. You must provide one or more examples from your experiences that you feel demonstrates your proficiency in each qualification.

A good way to proceed with the development of your example would be to use the STAR model:
S – Situation: Describe the situation and provide all relevant details.
T- Task: What tasks did you have to perform? What needed to be done to resolve the situation?
A- Actions: What did you do to resolve the situation and why did you choose this action plan? Did you consider other options? Why weren’t those options chosen?
R- Results: What was the result of the actions you took? What could you have done differently? Was the client satisfied? Did you achieve your goals?

Preference

Preference will be given to veterans first and then to Canadian citizens and permanent residents, with the exception of a job located in Nunavut, where Nunavut Inuit will be appointed first.
