As with other federal government establishments, the Canadian Forces College is a bilingual working environment, and offers a series of professional military education (PME) programmes at the graduate level primarily for merit-selected officers in the Canadian Armed Forces (and selected international officers and senior executives working in the security sector in relevant government departments). Intent of the process

The intent of this process is to fill one immediate need in Toronto for an indeterminate bilingual position for the Department of Defence Studies at the Canadian Forces College, the centre of professional military education in Canada.

A pool of partially qualified candidates may be established through this process to staff identical or similar positions with various tenures, language profiles and security requirements within the Department of National Defence.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

A Ph.D. in defence and security studies or war studies, defence management and/or defence economics, military history, strategic studies or a relevant doctoral degree in the humanities, social sciences, public administration or commerce/business administration with a research/teaching focus on the conduct, consequences, complexity, and practices of conflict or the organization and institutional management of contemporary militaries.

All-but-dissertation candidates will be considered with an exceptional record of professional military education (PME) engagement as well as teaching and research experience in the required fields below, with a condition of employment to complete the dissertation within two years of employment.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE :

EX1: Acceptable teaching experience at the university in at minimum four (4) or in at minimum five (5) of the following fields:
a) Operational planning processes within militaries and 21st century security challenges;
b) Change management and organizational behaviour;
c) Public administration in Canada, especially at the federal level;
d) Theories and practices of command and leadership, both in militaries and in whole-of-government security operations;
e) Defence economics;
f) Regional area studies expertise in South/East Asia or Russia/Eurasia with a defence and security focus; OR
g) Asymmetric cyber strategies and means/modes of attack; artificial intelligence.

EX2: Acceptable research experience* at the university level in at least three (3) of the following fields:

a) Operational planning processes within militaries and 21st century security challenges;
b) Change management and organizational behaviour;
c) Public administration in Canada, especially at the federal level;
d) Theories and practices of command and leadership, both in militaries and in whole-of-government security operations;
e) Defence economics;
f) Regional area studies expertise in South/East Asia or Russia/Eurasia with a defence and security focus; OR
g) Asymmetric cyber strategies and means/modes of attack; artificial intelligence.

* Acceptable research experience is defined by graduate-level research paper, invited/accepted conference or workshop presentation, technical report, publication in peer reviewed and professional military journals or academic presses, or another form of demonstrable expertise in an alternate or multi-media format, on any of the areas listed above.

EX3: Experience, including professional experience that would demonstrate evidence of significant scholarly potential and engagement with PME or with mature adult learners in a related or similar environment.

EX4: Experience with the supervision of senior undergraduate theses or graduate level directed projects and papers.

🔹In addition to EX1-EX4, Associate Professor (UT03) positions require the following: 🔹

EX5: Experience that would demonstrate effective teaching at the graduate/professional level in the fields related to the position being staffed over period of years.

EX6: Experience that would demonstrate independent scholarly ** activity over a period of years in two or more fields related to the position being staffed.

** Scholarly is defined as publishing in refereed journals or academic presses in fields related to the position being staffed.

If you possess any of the following, your application must also clearly explain how you meet it (other qualifications)

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS:

AQ1: Teaching experience at the graduate level or at a relevant professional school/professional military education institution or with mature adult learners in at least one of the areas listed at EX1 above, or in these areas:
a) New forms of conflict and use of new technologies, e.g. asymmetric and cyber strategies and means/modes of attack; artificial intelligence.
b) Regional security policy and political/historical/cultural expertise in one or more of the following: South/East Asia and Russia.

AQ2: Experience with designing/implementing innovative teaching methodologies, e.g. case studies and simulations.

AQ3: Experience with curriculum design and development in a professional/team-based context (e.g. professional military education).

AQ4: Scholarly activity**, research interest in and potential in more of the areas listed at EX2 above, or in these areas:
c) New forms of conflict and use of new technologies, e.g. asymmetric and cyber strategies and means/modes of attack; artificial intelligence.
d) Regional security policy and political/historical/cultural expertise in one or more of the following: Asia, Africa, or Latin America.

** Scholarly is defined as publishing in refereed journals or academic presses in fields related to the position being staffed.
