Duties

The Engineering Services (ES) Group at CanmetENERGY-Ottawa is responsible for engineering, technical support and maintenance services, including the instrumentation and control installations in all the labs and pilot plant facilities. As a member of the instrumentation and control team within ES Group, the candidate will help with instrumentation and control services to clients (research scientists, research engineers, technicians/technologists or external clients) on projects funded by government departments, cost-recovery or external stakeholders such as power generating stations and oil companies. The job requires design, layout planning, assembly, installation and testing of control systems related to mechanical, electrical, instrumentation and controls and/or hydraulic systems as part of industrial research applications. The candidate is also required to discuss project requirements with project teams and consult reference materials, as well as to ensure all installations comply with Canadian Electrical Codes and Canada Standard Association.

This position is located at the Bells Corners Complex, situated within Ottawa’s Greenbelt, yet close to restaurants and shopping within the area of Bells Corners. Situated between Nepean and Kanata, we are close to the Bayshore bus station as well as the Eagleson/Terry Fox Park and Ride with bus access to the Complex. Intent of the process

Education:
• Successful completion of post-secondary education from a recognized post-secondary institution in Instrumentation and Control Engineering Technologist/Technician, Electro-Mechanical Engineering Technology or another field related to the duties of the position.

Degree equivalency

Experience:

All streams:
• Experience in detecting and correcting irregularities and malfunctions in instrumentation and process control equipment.
• Experience in setting up and carrying out preventive maintenance or calibration on instrumentation and process control equipment.
• Experience with CAD software (i.e., AutoCAD, Visio, or similar software).
• Experience with at least two the following control system software:
o Honeywell Experion,
o ABB Freelance,
o NI Labview,
o Allen Bradley Automation Direct, or
o Siemens PLC/HMI programming.

Stream 1 – EG-04:
• Experience in fabrication, installation, and modification of commercial and industrial instrumentation and process control equipment.

Stream 2 – EG-05:
• Experience in layout planning, design, fabrication, installation, and modification of commercial or industrial instrumentation and process control equipment (minimum 7 years’ experience).
• Experience in providing technical advice, leadership and oversight to personnel and contractors in the design, construction, installation, and configuration of complex control systems.
• Experience communication protocols, such as, MODBUS, HART, OPC.

• Knowledge of configuring or programming process control equipment, such as, programmable logic controllers, process controllers, distributed control systems, or data acquisition systems.

Stream 1 – EG-04:
• Knowledge of temperature, pressure, level, and flow measurement and control strategies.

Stream 2 – EG-05:
• Knowledge of control loop tuning techniques as well as temperature, pressure, level, and flow measurement and control strategies.
