Duties

The National Aircraft Certification (NAC) Branch is an operational unit that is responsible for the oversight of Canada’s design enterprises that design/modify aeronautical products (aircraft, unmanned aircraft, helicopters, engines, and aircraft components). NAC is also responsible for the certification and approval of aeronautical products, including the validation of aeronautical products imported to Canada and certified aboard. NAC has responsibility for the Continuing Airworthiness of all aeronautical products registered in Canada. The NAC Branch has offices in Ottawa, Surrey, Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg, Toronto, Dorval, and Moncton.

Domestic certification capacity is supplemented by a delegation of authority system whereby industry representatives are granted the authority to make findings of compliance to design standards and in some cases issue approvals. Oversight of these delegated entities is also a key function of National Aircraft Certification.

The primary role of an Aircraft Certification Officer is to facilitate the project management activities on operational projects conducted within NAC. Continuous coordination between internal or external stakeholders in a local project queue is essential, ensuring good communication lines and understanding of priorities remain visible to the management and engineering teams. Part of this effort will include populating and surveying divisional databases, managing, and manipulating the data to provide metrics, and analyzing the results to develop communications. The position of Aircraft Certification Officer has a broad and diverse set of Key Activities and Responsibilities in supporting NAC operations.
