Duties

DFO has begun work on advancing a federal response to address Pacific salmon declines, including a long-term strategy for Pacific salmon to more effectively address the steeply declining trends in many Pacific salmon stocks. Under the Pacific Salmon Strategy Initiative (PSSI), a newly created Habitat Restoration Centre of Expertise will advance priority salmon habitat restoration efforts using nature-based solutions and innovative approaches to improve the effectiveness of habitat restoration efforts.

The Senior Fluvial Geomorphologist makes key scientific and technical contributions in the fields of Hydrology and Geomorphology in support of science-based decision-making for the Salmon Habitat Centre of Expertise program. As the lead authority in an area of specialized applied physical science, this position plays a key role in project planning and implementation, stakeholder engagement, analysis and scientific advice on habitat restoration activities.

You will work in a regional team of specialized staff (i.e. Biologists, Engineers, Technicians) to support operational delivery of habitat restoration in the interior watersheds of BC and Yukon and broader regional restoration efforts. Your work will involve field visits for data gathering, writing up reports and recommendations, and providing geomorphic advice on salmon habitat restoration activities.

Examples of duties include:
• Providing hydrologic and geomorphic expertise to restoration planning and design, conduct suitability analysis for restoration activities based on attributes of aquatic ecosystems and process based solutions under future projections of climate change.
• Identifies hydrological principles, tools and methods relevant to restoration studies and projects, placing emphasis on aquatic ecosystem processes to hydrological regime and developing recommendations for restoration approaches.
• Working closely with area and regional staff to conduct technical review of habitat restoration applications and providing professional advice to support decision-making.
• Support implementation of restoration projects, focusing on large scale, complex projects in priority areas.
• Monitor restoration projects to evaluate effectiveness and document success and failure for future guidance.

Education
• Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution, with acceptable specialization in physics, geology, chemistry or some other science relevant to the position.

Note:
The courses for the specialization must be acceptable and must have been taken at a recognized post-secondary institution, but not necessarily within a degree program in the required specialization.

Degree equivalency

Experience
• A minimum of 48 months of cumulative practical experience in hydrology or geoscience relevant to the position.

• Experience in communicating orally and written technical information or data to a variety of audiences for the purpose of advancing understanding or supporting decision-making.

• Experience working with multi-disciplinary teams related to management, assessment, restoration, or research of fish or aquatic habitats.

• Experience in conducting hydrologic or hydromorphic projects or studies.

• Experience in data management, analysis and review, including applying statistical principles.

• Experience in the analysis of hydrological data.

• Experience in conducting sediment transport field data collection, assessment or modelling, including, but not limited to sediment yield analysis, erosion and accretion studies, or suspended sediment and bedload analysis.

• *Recent experience in the evaluation and implementation of hydromorphic assessment and predictions to inform aquatic habitat management decisions.

• Graduation with a master’s degree and/or PhD from a recognized post-secondary institution in a field related to hydrology, geomorphology, earth science, water resources engineering or other similar degree relevant to the position.

• Professional designation (or immediate eligibility for registration) as a Professional Engineer/Geoscientist or other designation relevant to the position within British Columbia, the Yukon, or another Canadian jurisdiction.

Degree equivalency

Experience
• Significant demonstrated experience with aquatic habitat restoration projects in BC (pacific northwest) in coastal nearshore areas or watersheds.

• Experience with Indigenous, partner or stakeholder consultations or engagement on aquatic habitat or environmental issues.

• Experience using spatial information visualization or analysis tools relevant to the position.

• Five or more years of cumulative practical experience in hydrology or geoscience relevant to the position.

• Experience in evaluating technical documentation such as site investigation and feasibility, project plans and designs, hydraulic habitat assessment reports, hydromorphic assessment and modelling, or adaptive management plans related to aquatic habitats.

• Experience in applying project management principles and practices in carrying out projects.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance

• Valid Class 5 Driver’s License
• Willing to work overtime on occasion, including weekends.
• Willing and able to travel and work in isolated field locations, possibly including overnight stays.
• Health Canada Medical Clearance may be required dependent on position being staffed
