Duties

The successful candidate will:
• Undertake a graduate level research project on the importance of food, social, and ceremonial (FSC) fisheries for Mi’kma'ki communities. Participates in community-based and collaborative research during summer and/or winter in Mi’kma’ki to address community-driven questions related to FSC.
• Interact with Mi’kma"ki organizations, communities, and harvesters by seeking feedback on project development and implementation, answering questions, presenting progress and results, and responding to community needs or concerns.
• Collaborate with DFO researchers from National Headquarters in Ottawa and the Maritimes Region.
• Analyze and interpret data and publishes results in government reports and peer-reviewed journals.
• Present main study results on an annual basis at national and international conferences as opportunities arise and funding allows, in alignment with community guidance and consent.

Work environment

Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) leads the management of Canada’s fisheries and the safeguarding of Canadian waters. The Canadian Coast Guard, a Special Operating Agency within DFO, is responsible for services and programs that contribute to the safety, security, and accessibility of Canada’s waterways.

DFO Maritimes Region has the honour of working with Elder Noel Milliea from Elsipogtog First Nation community with whom the Candidate can communicate and receive mentorship from. Also, within the department is the Indigenous Relations and Partnership Hub (Indigenous Hub) which is able to provide support and advice to the Candidate. Candidates will also have contact with staff from the Unama’ki Institute of Natural Resources, whom are project collaborators. Additionally, Indigenous students can receive support, mentorship, and connect with community through Dalhousie University’s Indigenous Student Centre.

EDUCATION
✔ Possess an undergraduate degree (e.g., BSc, BA) in environmental science or studies, geography, sociology, anthropology, economics, biology, interdisciplinary studies, or related field from a recognized post secondary institution.
✔ The student must be currently enrolled or willing to enroll in the Master of Marine Management program at Dalhousie University.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE:
✔Experience in drafting summaries, literature reviews, reports, and presentations.

Note: In the context of student recruitment in the Federal Public Service, the experience can be acquired through studies, work experience, or volunteer activities.
