Duties

Operate and maintain a water filtration plant (Joyceville only); operate and maintain a sewage treatment plant (Joyceville and Warkworth); tests and treats potable water to meet drinking water standards; tests and treats sewage effluent to meet standards; maintains plant logs and documentation; submits orders to the manager for supplies and equipment for the work unit; provides expert advice to staff and management on water quality concerns and on the sewage treatment plant; occasionally provides oversight of inmates to maintain a safe and secure institutional and work environment.

Work environment

The incumbent is frequently require to adapt to changing priorities, multiple demands, imposed deadlines and interruptions when responding to emergencies and/or routine daily problems or situations. The work necessitates working in an isolated area of a federal correctional facility. There is exposure to inclement weather when performing inspections; exposure to unpleasant sights and noxious odours from chemical by-products of the sewage treatment plant. There is a requirement to wear cumbersome and/or restrictive Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). The work involves frequent
daily exposure to confined/restricted spaces, dirt, noise, temperature extremes, vibration and humidity. Daily use of hand and power tools,motorized cutting equipment and machinery – proper health and safety precautions must be followed.

Intent of the process

When you apply to this selection process, you are not applying for a specific job, but to an inventory for casual opportunities, which may be used to staff short-term vacancies within the Correctional Service Canada at our various Institutions across the Ontario Region.

Casual employment is temporary employment of 90 working days or less in a calendar year, to meet needs for temporary vacancies arising from vacation, sick leave, training, special projects, etc. These vacancies may require various operational requirements, condition of employment and/or work locations.

Education
• Completion of a secondary school diploma or successful completion of a provincially / territorially approved secondary school equivalency test.

Degree equivalency

Occupational Certification and Experience:

Joyceville Institution
• Possession of a valid Wastewater Treatment Operators’ Licence Class II (or higher) as recognized by the Province of Ontario’s certification authority OR equivalent certification from another province or territory in Canada; and,
• Candidates with a Class I licence are invited to apply, but will not be considered for positions until such time as they obtain a Class II licence;
• Possession of a valid Limited Surface Water Subsystem Licence (or higher) as recognized by the Province of Ontario’s certification authority OR equivalent certification from another province or territory in Canada.

Warkworth Institution
• Possession of a valid Wastewater Treatment Operators’ Licence Class II (or higher) as recognized by the Province of Ontario’s certification authority OR equivalent certification from another province or territory in Canada;
• Candidates with a Class I licence are invited to apply, but will not be considered for positions until such time as they obtain a Class II licence

Experience

Joyceville Institution
• Experience in the operation of a municipally, provincially/territorially, federally, or privately operated wastewater treatment plant;
• Experience in the operation of a municipally, provincially/territorially, federally, or privately operated conventional surface water treatment plant;
• Experience with plant control, monitoring and operating computer automated monitoring equipment, Supervisory Control & Data Acquisition (SCADA);
• Experience using computer programs in the Microsoft Office Suite, i.e. Word, Excel and Outlook;

Warkworth Institution
• Experience in the operation of a municipally, provincially/territorially, federally, or privately operated wastewater treatment plant;
• Experience with plant control, monitoring and operating computer automated monitoring equipment, Supervisory Control & Data Acquisition (SCADA);
• Experience using computer programs in the Microsoft Office Suite, i.e. Word, Excel and Outlook.
