Intent of the process

The intent of this process is to staff the current available positions listed below. We are also hoping to establish a pool of candidates that can be used to staff other LC-01 positions as hiring needs arise. These positions could be for various tenures (indeterminate, acting, assignment/secondment) and various official language requirements.

The process will be used to staff positions in various locations across the country. As part of your application, we will ask you to specify your regional/mobility preferences. In some circumstances, if operational requirements allow for it, remote working arrangements may be considered.

The intent is to staff the following through this process:

One position in the Indigenous Rights and Relations Portfolio
One position in the Public Law and Legislative Services Sector
One position in the Public Safety, Defense and Immigration Portfolio
One position in the Business and Regulatory Law Portfolio

1. Are you eligible for membership in the Bar of one of the provinces or territories of Canada or in the Order of Notaries in the Province of Quebec.?

EXPERIENCE

2. Have you independently dealt with complex legal issues? If so, tell us about the various issues. We are seeking experience normally associated with having performed a broad range of various complex related activities which would have been acquired over 4 years.
Complex is defined as having one of the following:
• multiple stakeholders;
• multiple areas of law; or
• circumstances where sources of information are absent, rare or conflicting.

3. Tell us about times you provided strategic, legal or policy advice on complex issues (same definition as in question 2) to senior officials or clients (director level in the federal government or equivalent). How did you proceed? Have you been doing this for at least four years?

4. Have you prepared briefing materials and provided verbal advice to senior officials or clients (director level in the federal government or equivalent)? What were the topics and how did you do this?

5. Have you coached or mentored junior lawyers (counsels)? Tell us about it.

Various language requirements
The Department of Justice could use this process to make appointments on a non-imperative basis to bilingual positions. A non-imperative basis means that the appointment is for an indeterminate period and the bilingual position has been identified by the deputy head as not requiring, at the time of the appointment, the appointment of a person who already meets the required level of proficiency in both official languages.
