The Industrial Decarbonization research team at CanmetENERGY-Ottawa develops and evaluates advanced technologies for the decarbonization of heavy industry with the intent to drive down greenhouse gas emissions to net zero for sectors such as iron & steel, cement & lime, petrochemical production, and critical minerals production. The team fills the technology development gaps between proof of concept at universities and commercial operations – the most exciting and rewarding part of technology development!
The incumbent will be responsible for performing engineering design and research activities associated with pilot plant and laboratory R&D as well as technology evaluation activities such as techno-economic analysis. These responsibilities will require the incumbent to spend a portion of their time designing systems in an office environment and a portion of their time building and operating pilot plants at CanmetENERGY-Ottawa.
The incumbent will work closely with both academic and industrial collaborators to transition innovative ideas to commercial operations with an emphasis on providing Canada with the technology it needs to achieve its net zero CO2 emission ambitions with a strong economy.

This position is located at the Bells Corners Complex, situated within Ottawa’s Greenbelt, yet close to restaurants and shopping within the area of Bells Corners. Situated between Nepean and Kanata, we are close to the Bayshore bus station as well as the Eagleson/Terry Fox Park and Ride with bus access to the Complex. This location also features trails and walking paths as well as workplace wellness programs including running, fitness and mental health initiatives to boost employee morale and work/life balance.

Education:
Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in chemical or mechanical engineering or some other engineering specialty relevant to the duties of the position.
Experience:
Experience in conducting research and development projects, including project management, pilot plant operation and evaluation, engineering design, and reporting for energy conversion systems.
Experience in planning and conducting industrial decarbonization research and development, including efficiency determination, evaluating system performance, or design/development of advanced processes.
Experience in data analysis and technical report writing.
Experience in the development of process models using Aspen, Python, or Comsol, and using analysis software.
Education:
Post-graduate degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering.
Eligibility for certification as a professional engineer in Canada with specialization in an engineering specialty relevant to the position.
Experience:
Experience in conducting research and development of advanced energy conversion systems such as, oxy-fuel combustion, gasification, post-combustion or CO2 capture and utilization.
Experience in design, construction, commissioning, and operation of advanced energy conversion systems such as, oxy-fuel combustion, gasification, post-combustion or CO2 capture and utilization.
Experience in searching scientific and technical literature to review the state of the art in various aspects of energy conversion systems.
Experience in using software such as Microsoft Project, Microsoft Visio, SolidWorks, Aspen/HYSYS, Maple or MATLAB.
