Duties

The position reports to a research scientist who leads several collaborative projects in a specialty area. They assist in the implementation of these projects. They participate in corporate committees to ensure the proper management of the research center. Working under the supervision of the researcher who plans the projects, they have a certain amount of autonomy in the performance of their duties.

Job duties include, but are not limited to:
• Participates in project planning and conducts laboratory or field experiments for targeted studies. Propose and adjust analytical methods to meet project needs. Prioritize and provide accountability for laboratory operations, sample management, and reliable data generation, validation and management.
• Provide quality quantitative and qualitative data to scientists for validation at critical phases of the project. Analyze data and interpret analytical results for dissemination. Participate in the writing of reports and articles for refereed scientific journals, scientific presentations, or research users.
• Reviews scientific literature and maintains current knowledge of state-of-the-art approaches and techniques in his scientific field and related disciplines to support project needs.
• Provide guidance to supervisor, colleagues, and project collaborators in area of specialty.
• Ensures the acquisition and maintenance of state-of-the-art equipment and the procurement of scientific materials. Participate in the organization and smooth operation of the laboratory and, as needed, other laboratories or shared spaces. Support the sound administrative and financial management of the laboratory.
• Ensure compliance with good laboratory practices and occupational health and safety and contribute to their development and updating.

Intent of the process

The intent of this process is to staff one (1) determinate position.

In addition, a pool of (fully or partially qualified) candidates may be established through this process to staff identical or similar positions at the BI-02 group and level within Natural Resources Canada or other departments, with various tenures (determinate period or permanent), various language requirements (English Essential, French Essential, English or French Essential, or Bilingual), linguistic requirements (imperative and/or non-imperative) and profile(s) (BBB/BBB, CBC/CBC, CCC/CCC, etc.), various security requirements (Reliability status or Secret clearance), various conditions of employment and for various locations.

Education
• A bachelor’s degree already obtained or that will be obtained by June 30, 2023, from a recognized post-secondary institution with specialization* in a biological science, or in a field relevant to the position.
OR
• A bachelor’s degree already obtained or that will be obtained by June 30, 2023, from a recognized post-secondary institution in a natural, physical, or applied science** with specialization* in a field relevant to the duties of the position.

*Note: you must have successfully completed at least 5 full-semester courses to be deemed as having the specialization in a particular field. The courses for the specialization must be suitable for the position and must have been taken at a recognized post-secondary institution, but not necessarily within a degree program in the required specialization.

**Note: some examples of degrees in a natural, physical, or applied science: biology, physiology, biochemistry, genetics, chemistry, agriculture, food sciences, neuroscience, immunology, zoology, forestry, bioinformatics, pure sciences, psychology, and biomedical sciences etc.
