Duties

Among other things, employees in BI-02 and PC-02 positions are asked to conduct analyses, participate and consult with various partners and stakeholders, undertake field work, draft documents and make recommendations to supervisors regarding the implementation of various regulatory, management, and conservation programs.

Work environment

The Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) Ecosystems Management sector works to protect, enhance and restore the biodiversity and health of Canada’s marine and freshwater environments through an integrated ecosystem approach that supports the sustainable use of aquatic resources. There is a growing understanding among Canadians of the importance of protecting and benefiting from our marine and freshwater environments and resources. The Government of Canada is using a modern and coordinated approach to manage the impact of human activities on Canada’s aquatic ecosystems in a sustainable manner, creating a balance between protecting aquatic ecosystems and maintaining a prosperous economy.

Ecosystems Management in Maritimes Region is comprised of the following Programs:

• Species at Risk Program
• Fish and Fish Habitat Protection Program
• Aquatic Invasive Species Program

Work arrangements:

With the Common hybrid work model for the Federal Public Service coming into force and due to the nature of the work and operational requirements, this position requires physical presence at the location identified (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia) in the form of a hybrid work arrangement.

Intent of the process

We are creating a pool of fully (or partially) assessed candidates which will be used to staff vacancies within DFO’s Ecosystems Management Sector in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.

Experience:

Please note that the completion of an academic course in itself does not constitute experience. The Assessment Board is looking for demonstrated experience gained in a work or volunteer setting or research at the honors thesis or graduate level.

• Experience analyzing information to inform the understanding or management of aquatic species and/or habitats

Education:

For BI-02: Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a natural, physical or applied science with specialization in a field relevant to the duties of the position.

For PC-02: Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution, with acceptable specialization in physics, geology, chemistry or some other science relevant to the position.

Asset Qualfiications:
These criteria may be used for further evaluation of candidates from the qualified pool to determine best fit for particular positions within each of the divisions.

Education:
• Graduation with a Masters or Doctoral degree from a recognized university in a program or specialization in aquatic science with a specialization in biology, environmental science or a related field

Degree equivalency

Experience:
These asset qualifications are specific to the work in one or more of our Programs. Candidates are asked to answer the screening questions for which they have experience.

Note: While these qualifications are not under the heading of essential qualifications, depending on the position being staffed, any of the following “Asset” or “other” qualification may be deemed as essential qualifications and only those candidates and persons with a priority or preference entitlement who possess those qualifications will be considered for that specific vacancy.

• Experience working on projects or initiatives that contribute to the management or conservation of aquatic habitat or aquatic species including species at risk.
• Experience providing advice to a manager or supervisor on the management or conservation of aquatic species or habitats.
• Experience regulating projects or initiatives for the conservation of aquatic habitat or aquatic species.
• Experience working on projects to identify, monitor or control aquatic invasive species.
• Experience engaging and collaborating with Indigenous groups, and/or non-government stakeholder organizations, or other governments.
