Duties

A Detachment Support Assistant provides administrative and operational support services for police officers and other employees at a Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) detachment. This position also provides front counter and telephone assistance, services and information to the general public.

Work environment

The Weslock RCMP Detachment is looking for motivated and industrious individuals to be a part of a team of support personnel who directly impact the public and regular members who work in frontline policing.

You will become part of a dynamic group of Public Servants who are responsible for work in areas such as police records, customer service, procurement, finance and a host of other support tasks at an RCMP detachment.

Detachment Service Assistants positions require the ability to think things through to problem solve, anticipate needs, stay current with applicable policies and procedures as well as be adaptable in an ever-changing work environment. There are many distractions within an RCMP Detachment and candidates must be versatile and able to manage multiple tasks at once, with the understanding that constant interruptions throughout the day will be unavoidable.

Candidates must also have sound organizational skills, be a self-starter, possess a calm demeanor under pressure and have the ability to work well with others.

Intent of the process

The intent of this process is to staff one (1) permanent position in Westlock, AB.

A qualified pool of candidates may be established and may be used to staff similar positions on a term and/or permanent basis in Eastern Alberta District within the RCMP. The pool could be used to offer acting appointments, assignments, secondments or deployments.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

• Successful completion of two years of secondary school or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.

Degree equivalency

• Experience providing services to internal and/or external clients over the phone, in person and/or in writing.
• Experience providing administrative support services including data entry and preparing documents such as outgoing correspondence and/or reports.
• Experience working with Microsoft Word and Excel.

• Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

If you possess any of the following, your application must also clearly explain how you meet it (other qualifications)

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS:

• Experience maintaining a law enforcement database such as CPIC and/or PROS.
• Experience liaising with court representatives or officials, or preparing court disclosure packages.
• Experience transcribing statements from audio files/recordings.
• Experience providing financial support services (services may include, but are not limited to, verifying and correcting financial claims, controlling and monitoring petty cash, preparing financial status reports, etc.).
• Experience working in a law enforcement and/or legal environment.
• Experience providing records management services such as indexing, cross-referencing, filing, retrieving, retaining, archiving and/or destroying data.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Willingness and ability to work in a busy police environment, including exposure to unsettling and/or graphic material.
• Willingness and ability to work overtime as required.
• Willingness and ability to travel for work and/or training purposes using various modes of transportation.
• Willingness and ability to maintain a valid driver's license, or have personal mobility to the degree normally associated with a driver's license.

• RCMP Enhanced Reliability Status security clearance.

Those selected must meet and maintain the above condition of employment throughout their employment.

» The successful applicant will have to obtain, as a minimum, an RCMP Reliability Status. The process requires a Security/Reliability Interview, a field investigation in matters of credit/finances, education, employment, references, etc.

Should a Civilian Member (CM) be found qualified and selected for appointment, the appointment will not result in a change of status to the Public Service (PS) category for the CM. Information regarding the CM appointment will be sent to all applicable candidates who are within the area of selection and participated in the advertised process.

Preference

Preference will be given to veterans first and then to Canadian citizens and permanent residents, with the exception of a job located in Nunavut, where Nunavut Inuit will be appointed first.
