Duties

Stream 1:
Conduct research and development to improve seismic hazard models in Canada. Maintain and develop seismic hazard models and tools in support of probabilistic seismic hazard calculations. Provide advice on seismic hazards and risks in Canada. Support the use, development and communication of seismic hazard values and provisions within the National Building Code of Canada. As member of a roster of duty seismologists, provide rapid authoritative information on earthquakes to clients, media and the general public.

Stream 2:
Conduct research and development to support nuclear safety and security in Canada. Provide sensitivity calculations and novel detector and methods design and evaluation in support of emergency radiation mapping. As member of the nuclear emergency response roster, participate in the provision of mobile survey and long-range radiation detection for test, exercise and urgent response, as needed.

Intent of the process

A pool of (fully or partially qualified) candidates will be established through this process to staff identical or similar positions at the RES group and level within Natural Resources Canada with various tenures (determinate period or permanent), with various linguistic requirement and for various bilingual linguistic profiles, various security requirements, various conditions of employment and for various locations.

Both streams :
EE1 - Graduation with an acceptable doctoral degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a field of the natural sciences related to the duties of the position, or the employer-approved alternative for the SE classification. (See Note 1).

Note:
The employer-approved alternative for the SE classification is an acceptable master’s or bachelor’s degree coupled with acceptable research, training and experience. The degree must be from a recognized post-secondary institution and in scientific fields and specialties related to the duties of the position. The training and experience must clearly demonstrate the ability to do personal research of doctoral degree calibre.

Both streams :
EE2: Abilities / Skills

Productivity or recognition is required for all positions in the Research Scientist sub-group (SE-RES) (Revised October 1, 1999).
Productivity or recognition includes developmental work leading to the issue of patents, copyrights, or the creation of improved varieties, functions, or designs, and/or recognition by the professional community of the research environment. It also refers to recognized achievement in the form of authorship and editorship of published or unpublished reports, books, papers, or other communications resulting from:
• Research, experimental development, or tasking associated with operational equipment and problems;
• Operational research and scientific analysis;
• Planning, analysis and evaluation of Canadian and foreign programs in research and development.

Degree equivalency

Both streams :
- EEX 1: Experience maintaining and writing software, tools or scripts for computational or scientific programming.

Stream 1 only :
- EEX 2: Experience in developing, and conducting research to advance knowledge in earthquake hazard seismology.
- EEX 3: Experience communicating results of research through publications, reports and presentations.
- EEX 4: Experience contributing to earthquake hazard analysis.

Stream 2 only :
- EEX 5: Experience in developing, and conducting research to advance knowledge in radiation physics.
- EEX 6: Experience in acquisition, processing and interpretation of radiation data.

AEX1: Experience in Python.
AEX2: Experience in the calculation of probabilistic seismic hazard assessments (PSHA) or the development of PSHA models.

AEX5: Experience in seismic source characterization or seismotectonic studies.
AEX6: Experience in earthquake risk, loss estimation, or earthquake engineering.
AEX7: Experience in studies of earthquake effects such as tsunamis, landslides, liquefaction, faulting, site amplification.
AEX8: Experience managing human (including students, contractors) and financial (contracts) resources.

Stream 2 only:
AEX9: Experience in linux system administration and in administration of a compute farm.
AEX10: Experience programming in a linux environment using advanced analysis tools such as C++ software, Geant4, EGS and the CERN root libraries.
AEX11: Experience in optimization of radiation detector design
AEX12: Experience in calibration and operation of instruments in outdoor conditions.
AEX13: Experience in measurement and characterization of natural radioactivity.
AEX14: Experience with hardware for pulse shaping, amplification and digitization.

K8: Knowledge of the human health consequences of exposure to radioactivity.
