Assessment accommodation

You must meet all essential qualifications in order to be appointed to the position. Asset qualifications may be a deciding factor in choosing the person to be appointed. Some essential and asset qualifications will be assessed through your application. It is your responsibility to provide appropriate examples that illustrate how you meet each qualification. In many selection processes, the first step is screening. It's during the screening phase that the Assessment Board will decide whether your application will be considered further or will be rejected.

Duties

Economists will be involved in all aspects of the office’s work, applying their economic skills to: tracking Canada’s international trade and investment performance including through contributions to the Department’s flagship State of Trade report and other products; providing advice to policy-makers such as through identifying priority sectors and markets; and performing analysis and research on current issues such as supply chains, inclusive trade, small and medium enterprises (SMEs), etc.

Work may involve collaboration with colleagues within the Office of the Chief Economist, other divisions within Global Affairs Canada, other federal government departments, as well as academia and international organizations.

Recruits will undertake research on a variety of issues relating to the Department’s mandate such as the importance of trade to the Canadian economy, the impact of trade agreements, the performance of Canadian exporting firms, and foreign direct investment.

The Office of the Chief Economist reports and advises on international trade and economic issues, including global, regional and sectoral trends and developments; and undertakes trade and economic research and analysis in support of Global Affairs Canada's various functions, including: trade and investment policy, including negotiation of international agreements; international business development; foreign affairs and international development policy; and attraction of foreign direct investment.

Intent of the process

A fully or partially qualified group of candidates may be identified and may be used to staff future term and indeterminate vacancies as well as to fill identical or similar positions at Global Affairs Canada with tenures that may vary according to the positions being staffed (ex. indeterminate, specified period, acting) which may have various language requirements such as Bilingual Imperative BBB/BBB, CBC/CBC, English or French Essential.

EDUCATION:
A master’s degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with specialization in Economics (more than half of graduate level courses in economics). Candidates must be able and willing to successfully complete their Master's degree by December 31, 2023.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE:
• Experience in conducting economic analysis using quantitative data.

• Obtained high GPA in Master’s in Economics program.

EXPERIENCE:
• Work experience related to economic research (e.g. Teacher's Assistant, Research Assistant, co-op on an economics team).

• Experience in conducting research using econometric techniques.
