Duties

The Nurse Education Advisor provides advice, guidance and assistance to nurses working in First Nation communities in primary care. The Nurse Education Advisor will:

• Provide advisory/consultative services, professional support and guidance to First Nations nursing professionals and support workers relative to the delivery of primary care services to First Nations;
• Conduct monitoring activities (e.g. site visits, chart audits), verify compliance with standards, assess/evaluate progress and prepare reports;
• Participate in the identification of training needs for primary care professionals and support workers, provide recommendations on the selection of training activities;
• Develop and deliver information sessions for best practice and knowledge in primary care;
• Participate with orientating new hires to community based programs and to working in primary care in First Nations Communities.

Work environment

First Nations and Inuit Health Branch (FNIHB), Indigenous Services Canada, is recruiting Registered Nurses to provide quality, evidence-informed nursing services to support our nurses working in First Nations communities. This position is intended to enhance the health of First Nations people by providing culturally respectful support to community health nurses working in the diverse cultures of Canada’s First Nation communities.

Intent of the process

The immediate need is to fill a two-year temporary vacancy.

A pool of qualified or partially assessed candidates may be established and may be used to staff similar positions at this group and level with various language requirements, various security requirements, various conditions of employment, various tenures (acting, assignment/secondment, deployment, term and/or indeterminate), and in various locations within Alberta.

  • Primary health care refers to an approach to health and a spectrum of services beyond the traditional health care system. It includes all services that play a part in health, such as income, housing, education, and environment. Primary care is the element within primary health care that focuses on health care services including health promotion, illness and injury prevention, and the diagnosis and treatment of illness and injury.

    Please describe your professional work experience in Primary Care.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

EDUCATION:
Graduation with a degree* from a recognized post-secondary institution with acceptable specialization in nursing, nursing service administration, nursing education or some other specialty relevant to the position

Degree equivalency

OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATION:
Eligibility for registration as a registered nurse in a province or territory of Canada

EXPERIENCE:
Recent and significant* experience as a Registered Nurse in the area of Primary Care, which must include emergency nursing or critical care nursing.

*Recent and significant experience is defined as the depth and breadth of experience normally associated with full-time performance of duties for a minimum period of 3 years within the last 5 years

EDUCATION:
A Master’s degree in Nursing or a field related to health

Certification in ACLS, PALS, ITLS
CNA certification in ER or critical care nursing

KNOWLEDGE:
Knowledge of current health issues in Canada and First Nations Communities
Knowledge of current research supporting Primary Care best practices

ORGANIZATIONAL NEED:

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Maintain current BLS certification
Travel to remote locations on gravel roads or small aircraft
Willingness and ability to work overtime on occasion
Willingness and ability to travel for 14 consecutive days inclusive of a weekend
Willingness and ability to work overtime in the event of a public health emergency or outbreak
Willingness to relocate to Alberta

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance
Possession of a valid driver’s license
Continuous professional registration (in good standing) with the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta
