Duties

As a Vessel Repair Technician, you will play a key role in ensuring our assets and vessels are safe and operational by performing regular maintenance and repair of damaged components; running diagnostics to troubleshoot problems; installing and upgrading systems; recommending modifications; ordering inventory; and documenting inspections, tests and results. Requirement to complete motor vehicle inspections and repairs to boat trailers (training will be provided).

Intent of the process

There is currently one immediate vacancy which this process will be used to fill. We may create a list of fully or partially qualified candidates which may be used to staff similar vacancies at this level within the Canadian Coast Guard, Atlantic Region.

EDUCATION
Graduation from a recognized post-secondary institution with certificate, diploma or higher in diesel mechanics, outboard motors or another specialization relevant to the duties of the position OR an acceptable combination of education, training or experience.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE
*Recent and significant experience installing, servicing, maintaining and overhauling mechanical and propulsion systems related to diesel or outboard engines.

*Recent and significant experience using diagnostic equipment to interpret, analyze and fix problem related to diesel or outboard engines.

*Recent and significant is defined as minimum five years experience acquired over the past eight years.

ASSET EDUCATION
►Possession of a provincial journeyman proficiency certificate (or higher) in a field related to the position.
►Possession of valid Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) training certification – OEM training for specific models of engine or outboard or other certifications.
►Possession of a Transport Canada certificate of competency as a marine engineer.
►Possession of an A.B.Y.C. certification (American Boat Yacht Council).

Degree equivalency

ASSET EXPERIENCE
►Experience applicable to small vessels and small craft industry installing, servicing, maintaining, and overhauling outboard bottom ends.
►Experience operating a motorized marine vessel.
►Experience working with multiple parties such as contractors, ship/vessel personnel, clients, etc.
►Experience performing inspections and acceptance testing on ships/vessels.
►Experience performing motor vehicle inspections for trailers and completing repairs to boat trailers.
►Experience in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook or an equivalent suite of office application software.
►Experience with computerized maintenance systems (e.g. Maximo) to write and generate work reports.

►Possession of a valid NS Class 5 (or equivalent) driver's license.

Conditions of employment

►Reliability Security Clearance
►Requirement to work aboard ships, in confined spaces and, occasionally, in extreme weather.
►Requirement to go to sea on vessels under trial.
►Requirement to work overtime, as needed, to meet operational requirements.
►Requirement to be on-call, on a rotational basis, to meet operational requirements.
►Requirement to travel, (by vehicle, aircraft or vessels) as needed, for operational and training purposes.
►Requirement to wear all necessary personal protective equipment as required by the duties of the position.
►Requirement to complete all mandatory training as identified by management.
►Willingness to repair and inspect boat trailers as required.
►Possession of a valid NS Class 5 (or equivalent) drivers license.
