Duties

The project for which this student is being hired involves the study of suspected buried glacial ice and deformed ice wedges in the Smoking Hills region, Northwest Territories. The study will be based on fieldwork planned for summer 2023, where vertical sections of buried ice exposed in active slumps will be sampled for ice chemistry, chronology (DOC and gas bubble CO2), and sediment content (mineralogy and geochemistry). This project seeks to resolve the age of two or more phases of glacial ice inundation of the area, the potential long-term stability of regional permafrost, and the nature of suspected glacitectonised permafrost. This work will contribute to our understanding of regional glacial history relevant to questions of mineral dispersal and ice sheet modelling as part of the GEM GeoNorth Program of the Geological Survey of Canada.
