We know that the job application process can be long and confusing. We’re looking to change that!
The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is breaking down barriers for job candidates by rethinking its staffing approach to remove biases and barriers. We are attempting to simplify every step of the process to make it easier for candidates to find work at the CBSA. As we test out our methods, we are always asking ourselves, and you the candidates on how we can do better. This is in line with the Government of Canada’s direction to creating a barrier-free Canada by 2040.
Our approach to recruitment will focus on the candidate, rather than the job. Our hope is to remove as many barriers as possible so that you can be successful based on your skills and potential.
Inclusion at the Canada Border Services Agency:
The CBSA processes millions of travelers every day – people of all ages, sizes, shapes, backgrounds, and abilities. This is why it’s important that our employees reflect the people we serve. We use workforce availability statistics to help us understand what our employee make-up should look like. Currently, we are under-represented in two employment equity categories: Persons with Disabilities and Indigenous peoples. Over the next three years, we hope to hire kind and talented individuals from these two communities to make our Agency better.
About Disabilities:
The Accessible Canada Act defines disabilities as impairments or functional limitations that, when combined with barriers, prevent people from fully and equally participating in society. There are many types of disabilities which include physical, mobility, sensory, intellectual, developmental, cognitive, learning, communication, and mental health.
Most people will have a disability at some point in their lives, and people can have more than one disability. Disabilities can be visible or non-visible, temporary or permanent. They can also be episodic, which means that they can change over time. Some examples include anxiety, depression, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), Crohn’s disease, migraines, allergies, etc.
We acknowledge that people experience disabilities in different ways, and that every person is unique. At the CBSA, we are trying to normalize talking about our different abilities. Our disabilities do not define who we are, and we know that with the right supports in place we can bring our whole self to work and work effectively. The CBSA, is committed to building an inclusive environment for people of all abilities.

About the Canada Border Services Agency:
The CBSA is a large agency, with over 15,000 employees located across the country and around the world. It makes the news at least twice a day, and the work environment is fast-paced, chaotic, and interesting. The majority of our frontline employees stay with us for the duration of their career, and they are the heart of our organization. We have a large variety of jobs that cover corporate areas such as communications, human resources, finance, procurement, information management, information technology, policy development and program management. We have three core business lines including Intelligence and Enforcement, Travellers, and Commercial and Trade. Together, our employees work hard to protect and serve Canadians everyday, securing our borders and contributing to the health and economic prosperity of our country.
The Ideal Candidate:
We are currently looking to fill a number of administrative positions including administrative assistants, program officers, and program and processing clerks.
Because the CBSA is currently in the midst of an exciting transformation towards Border of the Future, it means that our employees must be prepared for frequent, and unexplained change. Everything in the world affects the agency’s operations. Employees who thrive in a changing environment, are adaptable, have a growth mind set and are kind to themselves and others will do well. Concretely, we are looking for the following qualities and competencies:
- Client Service Orientation
- Communication skills (oral and written)
- Adaptability
- Integrity and Respect
Additional experience, skills and knowledge may be required dependant on the role. This information will be shared by email and at information sessions as job opportunities become available.
Opportunities may become available in other locations within CBSA.
The goal of this process is to fill approximately 50 positions at the CBSA. Everyone is welcome to apply, however we will give preference to qualified equity group candidates, specifically persons with disabilities and Indigenous first until our population is representative of the Canadian population. To be considered in one of the equity groups (Persons with Disabilities, Indigenous, Visible Minority, and Women), you will need to make a self-declaration in the Employment Equity section of their application.
It’s important to note that all hires must meet the required competencies to perform the job.
Candidates will be invited to attend a virtual information session which will take place between December 7th, 2022 and December 14th, 2022.
