Duties

The duties of an Aquatic Science Biologist II include: organisation and management of supervised scientific projects; provision of information, opinions or recommendations of a scientific nature in his own specialty ; participation in the development of new methods or protocols for the collection and analysis of scientific data ; participation in (and occasionally leading) freshwater or marine field studies or laboratory studies ; management of scientific products and equipment (data, instruments), writing or contributing to the writing of scientific articles and reports in a specialized field of aquatic biology and ecology and peer reviews of scientific manuscripts.

The duties of an Aquatic Science Biologist III include, in addition to the tasks described above, those of supervision of personnel, budget management and scientific responsibility for the planning and management of scientific projects.

Work environment

The workplace is Francophone and is located at the Maurice Lamontagne Institute in Mont-Joli, Quebec. Hybrid work arrangements may be discussed depending on the position to be filled, but there is a minimum requirement for employees to be present on anethical basis in the office. Exclusive teleworking mode will not be permitted.

Intent of the process

The purpose of this selection process is to staff 3 permanent B I-03 positions: 1) Senior Aquatic Invasive Biologist, 2) Environmental Incident Coordinator and 3) Senior Planning Biologist for Integrated Marine Response. A pool of qualified candidates will be established and used to fill similar positions with various tenures, security profiles and linguistic requirements within Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Quebec region.

Degree equivalency

EX1 : Experience* in scientific work in one of the following areas of aquatic biology: fish population science, fish stock assessment, fish habitat science, fisheries productivity science, marine mammal ecology, marine mammal stock assessment, ecosystem science, biodiversity science, aquatic invasive species, species at risk, genomics or biotechnology, benthic ecology, oceanography;
*A minimum of 2 years of experience will be required to meet the essential qualifications of BI-03 level.
EX2 : Experience in conducting quantitative analyses and interpreting data using statistical and analytical tools or techniques associated with biological studies, oceanography or stock or ecosystem assessments;
EX3 : Experience in writing technical documents, reports or scientific articles.

- Experience in spatial data analysis using geographic information systems (GIS) applied to environmental issues.
- Experience in work related to the biological and/or toxicological effects of contaminants on aquatic organisms.
- Experience in underwater imaging, image analysis or processing.
- Experience of field work in a coastal environment.
- Experience designing aquatic science sampling plans.
- Experience in using ecological niche models to predict the distribution of suitable habitats to support aquatic species.
- Experience in risk analysis in an environmental field.
- Experience using Matlab, R, SAS, SQL, S+, VB, C++, ADMB or other scientific programming software.
- Experience in scientific data management ; the use or design of databases (relational or non-relational); query programming for the purpose of storage; analysis of and access to scientific data.
- Experience conducting scientific studies on aquatic invasive species.
- Experience in assessing the environmental effects of projects (e.g. impact of human activities) on aquatic species or ecosystems.

-Be willing and able to work in the field for up to six consecutive weeks per year and to travel for up to 12 weeks per year, as required;
