Employment Equity contributes to a strong and sustainable Public Service by ensuring that the workforce reflects the rich diversity of Canada's population. At the Canadian Coast Guard, we see the value that a representative workforce brings to our organization. We celebrate the richness of the people that contribute to this organization’s workforce. A workforce where the diversity of thought, culture, ethnicity, age, gender orientation and experiences are considered as invaluable assets. Together, we can meet new challenges, fuel innovation through diversity, help create prosperity and make a positive impact in the workplace and the people we serve. Therefore, when a vacancy becomes available, we are making a commitment to first consider candidates who self-identify in one of the four Employment Equity Groups.
The Incident Management Department is divided into 4 areas:
1) Environmental Response
2) Search and Rescue
3) Vessels of Concern
4) Incident Management
Here is a little more detail on the four (4) areas.
ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSE (ER)
The Environmental Response (ER) program aims to reduce the impacts of marine pollution in Canadian waters on public safety, the economy and the environment. The program focuses on being prepared and providing an appropriate response to marine spills. ER deals with emergency incidents on a national and regional level. ER uses the Incident Command System (ICS) to manage on water pollution incidents and works with all concerned parties. National planning outlines how to respond to marine pollution incidents while the regional efforts use local response plans and area-appropriate tactical measures within their respective geographic areas of responsibility.
SEARCH AND RESCUE (SAR)
The Canadian Search and Rescue (SAR) system is a cooperative effort between federal, provincial, municipal and territorial governments, as well as volunteer organizations. It involves searching for and assisting people, ships, aircraft and other craft that are, or are believed to be, in imminent danger.
VESSELS OF CONCERN (VOC)
The Vessels of Concern program derives its mandate and authorities from the Wrecked, Abandoned or Hazardous Vessels Act. For its part under this new act, the Coast Guard is responsible for addressing all types of vessels representing any form of hazard – be it environmental, safety and security based, or socio-economic – within Canada’s exclusive economic zone. In this context, Coast Guard officers will investigate, hold owners accountable to their legal responsibilities, and direct or take immediate action as required to ensure the environment is protected.
INCIDENT MANAGEMENT (IM)
The Incident Management (IM) branch is part of the Incident Management Department. It is responsible for providing support to the Response Branch programs (Search and Rescue, Environmental Response and Vessels of Concern) such as guidance and coordination on financial activities, exercises and budgetary requirements, Incident Command System training, providing support in training exercises for the CCG and Integrated Business planning.
