Duties

The successful applicant will be part of a number of special projects, including environmental scans, inclusion and braiding of Indigenous science and western science systems, as well as fostering understanding and cultural awareness of Indigenous Science at ECCC. Further the successful applicant will support the Director of the new Indigenous Science Division, Dr. Myrle Ballard, Indigenous Scholar in the Dept. of Chemistry at the University of Manitoba.

Work environment

We are seeking an enthusiastic RAP student for the new Indigenous Science team within the Science and Technology Branch of Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC). The aim of this new division is to support the branch to increase understanding of Indigenous Science as a distinct science, and has functions such as strategic and technical analysis and advice; coordination of national-level initiatives regarding inclusion of Indigenous Science, as well as integration and inclusion of Indigenous Science in ECCC’s programs.

Supports for the student’s success include, first and foremost, supervision by the Director of Indigenous Science, with support from a growing and fast-paced team as well as an expanded network of future colleagues. There are also a number of internal networks to support the successful student such as ECCC’s Indigenous Employees Network that supports Indigenous employees and allies within the department.

Ability to communicate effectively is a must for this position; specifically, through both written and graphic means, communicating Indigenous Science to western-trained government officials. Candidates are particularly encouraged to highlight in their application their professional or personal experience working with Indigenous Peoples and / or the perspective that their lived experience as a First Nations, Inuit, Métis Nation, or urban Indigenous person would bring to the position.
