Duties

The Inuit Food Systems Research Technician will help advance the goals of the project “Supporting Makkovimiut Food Systems”, a partnership project between Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and the Inuit Community of Makkovik (Nunatsiavut). This co-developed project focuses on composting, northern vegetable growing, and bakeapple (appik) as interconnected parts of food systems in Makkovik.

Your work will draw on your in-depth community experience and knowledge of composting, gardening and berry harvesting in Inuit communities, to assist and conduct research and community outreach on these topics. You will be working alongside a diverse team, including Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada scientists, research technicians, and students; Makkovik Inuit Community Government; Elders; youth; and community growers. Your work may also include opportunities for travel to other parts of Labrador, for work and training related to food systems research.

Work environment

This position is based in the Inuit Community of Makkovik, in the self-governing Inuit region of Nunatsiavut. Work locations will include a home office setting, as well as composting, cultivation and bakeapple locations in and around Makkovik. The successful candidate will be responsible for securing accommodation, and must have access to a vehicle for travel purposes within Makkovik.

The position is affiliated with the St. John’s Research and Development Centre, a leader in the research, development and technology transfer of agricultural innovations that support sustainable and productive boreal-northern primary production, with a special emphasis on Newfoundland and Labrador.

EDUCATION:
A secondary school diploma, a satisfactory score on the Public Service Commission’s high school diploma alternative test, or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience related to Inuit food systems or research. Education, training or experience can be obtained in various ways, including community work, volunteer work, employment, or personal experience in gardening and harvesting.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE:
-Experience with composting, vegetable and fruit growing, and berry harvesting in Nunatsiavut.
-Experience with collecting samples (e.g., soil samples, plant samples) and using monitoring equipment (e.g., temperature readings, moisture readings, photo monitoring).
