Duties

Your Challenge :
The Correctional Service of Canada is looking for a Deputy Commissioner, Indigenous Corrections to be the champion for Indigenous Corrections and ensure appropriate attention and accountability towards Indigenous issues, including the overrepresentation of Indigenous offenders, and help CSC to implement the many calls for justice.

The Deputy Commissioner, Indigenous Corrections (DCIC) is accountable for the strategic direction, development and monitoring of all aspects of the programs, interventions, and operations related to Indigenous Corrections across the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC), including the development and implementation of operational policies, approaches, and processes.

The Deputy Commissioner, Indigenous Corrections is one of 16 positions reporting directly to the Commissioner.

Work environment

Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) is part of the Public Safety portfolio, which includes the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) and the Parole Board of Canada (PBC).

As part of the criminal justice system, CSC contributes to the public safety of Canadians in three distinct ways: by maintaining the safe custody of offenders serving sentences two years or more; by providing programs that prepare offenders for their safe return into the community, and, by supervising and supporting offenders who are conditionally released to the community.

CSC not only works closely with traditional criminal justice partners, such as the police, courts and the Parole Board of Canada, but also with other federal organizations, such as the Department of Justice and Indigenous Services Canada.

Education:
Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a field relevant to the position.

Degree equivalency

Experience:
• Experience providing strategic advice and briefings to senior officials (Presidents; CEOs, Chiefs, etc) related to Indigenous issues.
• Experience in managing or delivering social programs or services for Canadians.
• Experience establishing and maintaining partnerships and networks with various internal and external stakeholders (such as, province or territories, management committees, or non-governmental organizations (NGOs)
• Experience in managing human or financial resources.

In the context of this process, experience will be assessed based on the depth and the breadth of experience of the candidate, normally acquired by performing a broad range of various and complex related activities for a period of at least 3 years at a senior level.

Knowledge:
• Knowledge of CSC’s mandate, programs and services as they relate to Indigenous offenders.
• Knowledge of the Criminal Justice System as it relates to the overrepresentation of incarcerated Indigenous Peoples.
• Knowledge of the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action and the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls Calls for Justice as they relate to CSC.

The Affirmation of Indigenous Identity Form will have to be completed by the selected candidate prior to appointment.

Proof of your original education credentials will be required at the interview stage.
