Mactaquac Biodiversity Facility:
The Mactaquac Biodiversity Facility is located just outside of Fredericton, New Brunswick, and was built in 1968 following the building of the Mactaquac Hydroelectricity Dam on the Saint John River. The facility includes the fish collection facility and trucking operation at the dam, a fish sorting facility at the main site, the early rearing facility beside the dam, and the main salmon hatchery, which houses a Live Gene Bank program and a modern lab. The Senior Biodiversity Technician (GT-03) at this site involves working in a specialized fish culture and rearing environment involving all aspects of fish husbandry, including feeding, spawning, tagging, sampling, data collection, and data management. Additionally, the senior technician will be involved in field operations, electrofishing and occasional fish trucking.
Coldbrook:
The Coldbrook Biodiversity Facility is a conservation-based hatchery located in the Annapolis Valley near Kentville, Nova Scotia. This facility houses live gene bank and supportive rearing programs for endangered stocks of wild Atlantic salmon. The duties involve working in a specialized fish culture and rearing environment involving all aspects of fish husbandry including: spawning, feeding, tagging, sampling, data collection, and data management. Additionally, the technician will be involved in field collections of various life stage of Atlantic salmon via fish ladders, trap nets and electrofishing.
Anticipatory staffing pool - A pool will be established and may be used for term, indeterminate, and acting opportunities.

EDUCATION:
• Secondary school diploma or employer- approved alternatives (an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience).
EXPERIENCE:
• Experience in handling finfish.
• Experience in recording, organizing and maintaining scientific information such as sample data, or fish husbandry records (for example: feed data, growth data, health and treatment information).
• Experience using computer applications for word processing, spreadsheets, email and internet.
• Experience in the control and operation of equipment and instrumentation (i.e. water quality meters, data loggers etc.).

KNOWLEDGE:
• Knowledge of finfish diseases and appropriate treatments.
• Knowledge of water quality parameters necessary for rearing aquatic animals.
ABILITIES:
• Ability to do basic data analysis, validation, and summary statistics using a computer.
• Ability to problem solve and apply safe, efficient solutions.
• Ability to communicate effectively orally.
• Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

EXPERIENCE:
• Experience working in a fish culture environment (examples include: monitoring and control of environmental factors, biosecurity, monitoring aquatic animal health, spawning and incubation of eggs).
• Experience in the operation of complex rearing environments including filtration, sterilization and oxygenation.
• Experience determining the type and amount of food for optimal fish rearing.
• Experience in spawning finfish including incubation, care, and treatment of eggs.
• Experience with live fish transport using oxygen or recirculation.
• Experience in electrofishing.
