The near surface geophysics section at the Geological Survey of Canada conducts research in the application of geophysical methods to groundwater, permafrost, environmental, and engineering studies aligned with the departmental priorities of Natural Resources Canada. Scientists within the near surface geophysics section plan and execute research activities with other NRCan scientists and other federal, provincial, and territorial government agencies with a focus on fieldwork and applications in Canada. Results of research activities are communicated to the department, other agencies, and the public through reports, publications, and meetings.

Ottawa office: Located across from Dow’s Lake in the heart of Ottawa, we are close to greenspace and the Rideau Canal. Take runs at lunch or skate to work. Intent of the process

The intent of this selection process is to staff one permanent position.

A pool of (fully or partially qualified) candidates may be established through this process to staff identical or similar positions at the RES group and level within Natural Resources Canada with various tenures (determinate period or permanent), various language requirements (English Essential, French Essential, English or French Essential, or Bilingual), linguistic requirements (imperative and/or non-imperative) and profile(s) (BBB/BBB, CBC/CBC, CCC/CCC, etc.), various security requirements (Reliability status or Secret clearance), various conditions of employment and for various locations.

EDUCATION
Graduation with an acceptable doctoral degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a field of the natural sciences related to the duties of the position, or the employer-approved alternative for the SE classification

Abilities / Skills
Productivity or recognition is required for all positions in the Research Scientist sub-group (SE-RES) (Revised October 1, 1999).

Productivity or recognition includes developmental work leading to the issue of patents, copyrights, or the creation of improved varieties, functions, or designs, and/or recognition by the professional community of the research environment. It also refers to recognized achievement in the form of authorship and editorship of published or unpublished reports, books, papers, or other communications resulting from:

Research, experimental development, or tasking associated with operational equipment and problems;
Operational research and scientific analysis;
Planning, analysis and evaluation of Canadian and foreign programs in research and development.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE
E1 - Experience leading and conducting independent research in near surface or environmental geophysics.
E2 - Experience in at least two recognized and distinct geophysical survey methods including data collection, processing, interpretation, and applications.
E3 - Experience conducting field operations.
E4 - Experience preparing scientific technical publications, including lead authorship of work(s) in recognized scientific journals relating to near surface or environmental geophysics.
E5 - Experience in computational geophysics including code or software development.

If you possess any of the following, your application must also clearly explain how you meet it (other qualifications)

Asset experience:
AE1 - Demonstrated expertise in electromagnetics, induced polarization, geophysical instrumentation or sensor development, computational geophysics, or artificial intelligence.
AE2- Experience in applying geophysical techniques for hydrogeology, permafrost, environmental, or engineering studies.
AE3 - Experience conducting field operations in remote areas (particularly the Canadian Arctic).

K2 - In-depth knowledge of at least two distinct geophysical survey methods.
K3 - Knowledge of the application of geophysics to hydrogeology, permafrost, environmental, or engineering studies.

A1 - Ability to initiate, lead, and conduct independent and collaborative scientific research;
A2 - Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing;
A3 - Ability to work in a team environment.
