Duties

The outputs of this student position will be a thesis manuscript and one peer reviewed publication summarizing the following (project scope may change with data availability and depth of focus on particular aspects)
• Primary objective: Detailed assessment of sediment cores, bathymetry and subbottom data to determine past history of hazardous landslide and flooding events associated with the Nass River submarine channel
• Secondary objective: Delineating and classifying geohazards (and establishing relative dates if possible) using available bathymetry data, subbottom data, and physical samples (cores and grab samples) in Portland Inlet/Portland Canal.

Specific Tasks:
1. Conduct a thorough literature review on regional settings and seabed geological hazards.
2. Compile multiple datasets as needed for the detailed investigation
3. Establish a chronology of landslides and seabed hazards around the Nass River submarine channel system
4. Complete the classification of landslide features in Portland Canal/Portland Inlet.
5. Participation in fieldwork as required

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

• Currently enrolled or willing to enroll at the University of Victoria in a Master of Science program with a specialization in Geosciences or a related discipline that requires research as part of the curriculum.
• Graduation with a Bachelor of Science in Geoscience or another relevant specialization from a recognized post-secondary institution.

Degree equivalency

In the context of student recruitment in the federal public service, experience can be acquired through studies, work experience or volunteer activities.

• Experience using GIS and remote sensing software, such as ArcGIS, for compiling and manipulating geoscience data.
• Experience with Python computer programming language to create scripts for data processing/analyses.
• Experience in working with sub-bottom profiles for basic geological interpretation
• Experience with sediment core logging/interpretation
• Experience in synthesizing geoscience data.
• Experience with BC Coast marine geoscience data

• For fieldwork, the student must be able to pass a Health Canada medical, and possess or obtain safety courses as needed, including first aid/CPR, etc.
