The Shellfish Technologist collects data regarding shellfish aquaculture lease applications and existing leases and performs compliance checks on aquaculture leases in support of the delivery of the Aquaculture Leasing Program in PEI. The majority of the work is done on the water from a boat.
KEY ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Monitors and evaluates aquaculture leaseholds through filed activities such as site inspections, lease boundary marking and compliance audits in support of the aquaculture leasing program, and provides advice to leaseholders regarding any uncovered deficiencies or irregularities, recommending corrective actions.
• Participates, as part of a team, in the assessment of new lease and licences sites through the application of established rules and protocols.
• Carries out or participates in the collection, preservation and analysis of leasing and technical data and related information using established methods and procedures.
• Enters, maintains and catalogues leasing and technical data and related information in internal information management (IM) and geographic information systems (GIS) and identifies and provides specific sets of data, data summaries, and information products to senior technicians and managers as required.
• Operates and maintains field equipment and technical instruments during surveys and other assessment projects and provides stewardship and safekeeping services for the Division’s survey data and related information and well as its survey equipment.
The purpose of this recruitment and selection process is to establish a list of qualified candidates to staff an indeterminant seasonal position (approximately 7 months/year and typically from late April to early November but this is subject to change depending on the season & weather conditions). The selection process may also serve to staff similar or identical positions on a term or indeterminate, with various language profiles, security requirement and condition of employment within the department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada.

EDUCATION
A secondary school diploma OR an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.
- Experience in the operation and basic maintenance of a small powered vessel and field equipment.
- Experience using computer-based software (such as but not limited to email, spreadsheets, and word processing) in support of work-related tasks and communications.

ASSET EDUCATION
Graduation with a diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution with specialization in a natural, physical or applied science with specialization in a field relevant to the duties of the position.
ASSET EXPERIENCE
- Experience in working with GIS equipment or software.
ASSET KNOWLEDGE
- Knowledge of the growing techniques, practices and challenges in the Atlantic Canadian Shellfish Aquaculture Sector.
