Duties

The EC-04 position would be a junior Agro-Economist Advisor in the Agriculture and Food Systems Division drawing from a strong knowledge base and providing strategic, policy and technical advice to support agriculture, forests and food systems projects. The Advisor would report to the Deputy Director of Policy & Practice within the Agriculture and Food Systems Division and support the other members of the team with specialist agro-economic advice. Key activities of the position would include:
1. Providing strategic & policy advice on agriculture, and related sub-themes, in particular related to agricultural value-chains, agricultural finance or carbon markets.
2. Providing technical agro-economic advice, expertise and advisory services to support global, geographic, and partnerships international assistance programming, including the review of international development project documents.
3. Developing professional networks, partnerships and build alliances with agriculture partners, including within the Department, interdepartmentally, development networks, global organizations, research institutes, and professional bodies working in their theme/sector.
4. Representing Canada and delivering policy and technical positions on agriculture in both domestic and international events related to international agricultural development, including multilateral negotiations, bilateral government meetings, and knowledge events.
5. Developing evidence-based knowledge products, drawn from economic, socio-economic or agronomic research and analysis.

EDUCATION:

• Graduation with a Master's degree from a recognized university with acceptable specialization in agricultural economics or field related to agri-food systems.

Note: Candidates must always have a university degree. The courses for the specialization do not necessarily have to be part of a degree program in the required specialization. The specialization may also be obtained through an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE:

• Experience conducting research in the agriculture or food systems sector in the context of international development;
• Experience providing agro-economic advice on project and policy documents related to agricultural value-chains, agricultural finance or carbon markets;
• Practical field work experience in agriculture or agribusiness private sector, including in farming.

KNOWLEDGE OF …:

• Agro-economic, trade or agri-business/value-chain development in agri-food systems;
• International organisations, networks and alliances related to global agriculture and food systems.

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS

EXPERIENCE:

• Experience in capacity building on agriculture or food systems, such as producing tools or providing training.
• Practical work experience in agriculture of food systems in francophone developing countries.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Occasionally, be willing and able to work overtime on short notice;
• Occasionally, be willing and able to travel in Canada or abroad.
