Reporting to the Organic Chemistry Supervisor, the EG-06 is responsible for (these duties include but are not limited to):
• operate a high-resolution magnetic sector mass spectrometer (HRMS) including all maintenance and troubleshooting;
• process data and test results based on established procedures and guidelines; manage non-compliant results according to the procedures in place;
• keep comprehensive records of samples, observations, measurements, tests performed and procedures followed;
• lead method development and method validation for new methods;
• provide scientific information and advice to the supervisor on subjects falling within his/her area of expertise;
• ensure that the work is carried out according to best OHS practices;
• write, review and follow the standard operating procedures and analytical methods according to ISO/IEC 17025.
The purpose of this selection process is to staff one (1) bilingual (BBB) indeterminate (permanent) full-time position in Montreal, Quebec. A pool of qualified candidates could be established and used to staff similar full-time or part-time positions with Environment and Climate Change Canada, security profiles and language requirements may vary depending on the position to be staffed.

Education
A degree from a recognized post-secondary institution, with acceptable specialization in Chemistry, Toxicology, or an equivalent field directly related to the duties of the position, or an acceptable combination of education, training, and/or experience.
Experience
EX.1: Experience with gas chromatography or liquid chromatography.
EX.2: Experience operating a mass spectrometer.
EX.3: Experience in quantitative analysis of organic chemicals (extraction, cleanup and instrumental analysis, including data processing).
Asset Qualifications
Education
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in science.
Experience
ExA.1: Significant work experience in an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratory (the term "significant" meaning at least 3 years of experience).
ExA.2: Work experience in preparing samples for trace analysis of persistent organic pollutants such as dioxins and furans, pesticides, PAHs, etc.
ExA.3: Experience in quantitative chemical analysis of environmental samples (soil, sediment, biota, or water).
ExA.4: Experience method development and method validation.
ExA5. Experience using a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
ExA.6: Experience writing technical documents (standard operating procedures (SOP), analytical methods, etc.).
ExA.7: Experience operating a high-resolution mass spectrometer, either a sector instrument, a Q-ToF instrument, or an Orbitrap instrument.
ExA.8: Experience in complex instrument troubleshooting such as gas chromatographs and mass spectrometers.

Operational requirements
Able and willing to be required to travel to attend supplier workshops or training seminars/conferences, etc.
Able and willing to occasionally work overtime and weekends.
Able to work for long hours in a chemical hood, with occasional organic solvent fumes and constant noise.
Able to work standing for long hours.
Able to work long hours and use computers in an office or in the field.
Able to work occasionally with a chemical respirator (requirement to shave beard).
