Reporting to the Organic Chemistry Supervisor, the EG-05 is responsible for (these duties include but are not limited to):
• operate an atmospheric pressure gas chromatography (APGC) mass spectrometer including all maintenance and troubleshooting;
• process data and test results based on established procedures and guidelines; manage non-compliant results according to the procedures in place;
• keep comprehensive records of samples, observations, measurements, tests performed and procedures followed;
• assist in sample preparation for routine samples;
• lead method development and method validation for new methods (including sample preparation);
• ensure that the work is carried out according to best OHS practices;
• write, review and follow the standard operating procedures and analytical methods according to ISO/IEC 17025.
The purpose of this selection process is to staff one (1) French essential indeterminate (permanent) full-time position in Montreal, Quebec. A pool of qualified candidates could be established and used to staff similar full-time or part-time positions with Environment and Climate Change Canada, security profiles and language requirements may vary depending on the position to be staffed.

Education
A degree from a recognized post-secondary institution, with acceptable specialization in Chemistry, Toxicology or an equivalent field directly related to the duties of the position, or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.
Experience
EX1. Experience with gas chromatography or liquid chromatography.
EX2. Experience operating a mass spectrometer.
EX3. Work experience in the preparation of environmental samples (soil, sediment, biota or water).

ExA1. Significant work experience in an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratory. (the term "significant" means at least 2 years of experience).
ExA2. Work experience in preparing samples for trace analysis of persistent organic pollutants such as dioxins and furans, pesticides, PAHs, etc.
ExA3. Experience in quantitative chemical analysis of environmental samples (soil, sediment, biota, or water).
ExA4. Experience method development and method validation.
ExA5. Experience using a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
ExA6. Experience writing technical documents (standard operating procedures (SOP), analytical methods, etc.).

K1. Knowledge of main methods used for the extraction of matrices (solids, water, biota, etc.) and clean-ups of samples.
K2. Knowledge of gas chromatography or liquid chromatography principles (injectors, columns, etc.).
