The Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) is the national organization for geoscientific information and research. Since 1842 the Geological Survey of Canada has produced cutting-edge, authoritative geoscience to support mineral exploration, climate change research, marine and coastal resilience, and natural hazards mapping. Our work supports decision-making in the mining and energy sectors, as well as national sovereignty, hazards risk management, and more.
The Calgary Division leads multidisciplinary geoscience and innovative laboratory-based research for the GSC and our partners, with a focus on Energy. We produce world-class geoscience that provide expert advice to inform sustainable energy and mineral development, environmental assessments, and land-use decisions. We operate state-of-the-art laboratory facilities that undertake collaborative research with GSC programs. We build strong relationships in the energy sector and with scientific partners across Canada, guided by a philosophy of co-development.
Calgary Office: Located in the University Research Park across from the University of Calgary. There is easy access to transit, C-Trains, and major bus routes.
The intent of this selection process is to staff one (1) indeterminate position; Head, Energy Geoscience Subdivision, Geological Survey of Canada, Calgary. This position will require an onsite presence at GSC Calgary with some teleworking.
A pool of (fully or partially qualified) candidates may be established through this process to staff identical or similar positions at the SE-REM-02 group and level within the Geological Survey of Canada - Calgary Division, at Natural Resources Canada, with various tenures, various language requirements and with various conditions of employment.

► Graduation with an acceptable doctoral degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a field of natural sciences related to the duties of the position, or the employer-approved alternative for the SE classification.
Note: The employer-approved alternative for the SE classification is an acceptable master’s or bachelor’s degree coupled with acceptable research, training, and experience. The degree must be from a recognized post-secondary institution and in scientific fields and specialties related to the duties of the position. The training and experience must clearly demonstrate the ability to do personal research of doctoral degree caliber.
► Extensive experience* in managing a range of scientific research activities related to geoscience or geology or other scientific fields relevant to the position.
► Experience in providing strategic advice to senior management, such as related to science policy options or scientific program development.
► Experience in the planning and managing of human** and financial*** resources.
► Experience in developing and delivering collaborative research initiatives with various partners or stakeholders.
*Extensive experience is defined as three (3) years of experience acquired in the last seven (7) years.
**Managing human resources is defined as applicants must clearly demonstrate that they have supervised staff, assigned work, managed and assessed performance, and ensured development and training needs of employees are met.
***Managing financial resources is defined as applicants must show evidence of managing and being accountable for a budget. This experience is defined as being responsible for sound financial planning, forecasting, and reporting.
► Experience managing natural resources, public safety or environmental science programs.
► Experience in developing and leading original research projects from conception to completion, including project deliverables.
► Experience with projects or programs associated with renewable energy (such as geothermal, hydrogen) or non-renewable conventional and non-conventional energy resources.
► Willingness and ability to work flexible hours including overtime.
