Assessment accommodation

CANMET Materials operates a pilot scale metal casting facility to support the materials research. CANMET’s overall priorities are focused on the following program areas: Materials for Energy End Use; Materials for Energy Generation; Materials for Defense; Emerging Materials; Pipeline Materials.

Area of Focus / Specialization:
The primary functional areas include supporting the vacuum induction melting activities to produce experimental metals; supporting activities to produce near-net-shape forging blanks for metal automotive structures; supporting basic research activities to produce novel alloys; supporting activities to produce alloys for nuclear power generation. The work is primarily hands-on, with office and administrative requirements. It includes maintenance activities related to the primary functional areas.

Client Service Results:
Under guidance, as a member of the Casting team reporting to the Casting Lab Supervisor: This technologist will contribute to liquid metal experiments at lab and pilot scale, by participating in the preparation, setting up and carrying out of experiments within a team environment. This will involve some independent work but the primary functions will take place in a team environment.

Intent of the process

A pool of fully or partially qualified candidates may be established through this process to staff identical or similar positions at Natural Resources Canada and in the Federal Public Service with various tenures (determinate period or indeterminate), to staff positions with various language requirements, various security requirements, various conditions of employment and for various locations.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

- Successful completion of an accredited technology program (2 year minimum from a post secondary institution) in metallurgical engineering, materials engineering, manufacturing, or mechanical engineering or an equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience.

Degree equivalency

- Experience using equipment, machinery and facilities related to metal casting such as melting furnaces, ladles, cranes, forklifts, sampling equipment, laboratory equipment.
- Experience in collecting, compiling and conducting basic analysis of data from experiments.
- Experience with record keeping systems such as files, inventories and keeping detailed technical records.

- Knowledge of the principles and practices of metal casting processes.
- Knowledge of operating and maintenance techniques related to specialized equipment such as melting furnaces, casting equipment, and material handling equipment.
- Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety.

- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to perform basic calculations and prepare spreadsheets.
- Ability to plan and organize work in a team environment including handling conflicting priorities.
- Ability to suggest solutions to technical problems.

- Effective interpersonal relationships.
- Coordinating activities with the activities of others to achieve group goals over personal goals. i.e. team player.
- Thoroughness/attention to detail.

- Travel outside the normal work area is required periodically to conduct industrial trials.
- Occasional overtime duty.
- Operating heavy equipment such as forklift and overhead crane.

- Experience with molten metal melting or handling.
- Experience working in a laboratory environment.
- Experience using data acquisition systems to collect data from sensors such as thermocouples, load cells, pressure sensors.
- Experience melting and processing magnesium alloys; aluminum alloys; copper alloys; cast irons; steels; specialty ferrous alloys – using electric resistance furnaces or electric induction furnaces (please specify which ones).
- Experience with basic metal fabrication techniques like welding. Specify which processes.
- Experience working with naturally pressurized gating systems.
- Experience making moulds using the following processes: green sand; chemically-bonded sand; plaster; lost wax.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance

- Wearing of personal protective equipment including but not limited to safety boots, safety glasses, hardhat, respiratory equipment requiring a clean shaven face, heat resistant clothing.
- The work requires handling of hazardous materials.
