Duties

This project will fall under the Aquatic Contaminants Research Division’s mandate focused on tracking changes in the aquatic biodiversity and ecosystem stability of the St. Lawrence River in recent decades as a result of agricultural development, eutrophication, global warming and the arrival of invasive species in recent decades.

The objectives of this project will be to 1) determine if there has been a homogenization of aquatic communities along the St. Lawrence River in recent decades by analyzing multiple long-term monitoring datasets and newly sampled sites, 2) calculate an extinction coefficient to determine the percent loss in diversity per decade and compare the River to other aquatic systems on a global scale, 3) apply multivariate statistics to identify the sites that have experienced the most change (high local contribution to β-diversity) as well as the species at risk (species that have contributed the most to this change), and 4) apply ordinations and discriminant analyses to highlight what these unique sites in terms of species composition have in common (proximity to city effluents, high percentage of shoreline development, or other anthropogenic factors).

The key tasks for this RAP position will be to lead field work along the St. Lawrence River, perform statistical analyses of data, interpret results and write scientific articles for publication in peer-reviewed journals.

Work environment
