Research Scientist – Welding Metallurgy: In consultation with research scientists and technologists and in direct support of program objectives, the successful candidate will develop and apply welding theory and experimental methods to resolve industrially relevant welding problems. They will utilize the mechanical testing, simulation and welding facilities at the CanmetMATERIALS laboratory and also coordinate with other university and industrial laboratories. The opportunity exists to undertake fundamental as well as applied research. They will work with and may supervise technicians, engineers, and scientists using the facilities, advise on pipeline welding related matters, instruct others in applications of welding technologies as required, and lead in the interpretation of results. The successful candidate will also provide authoritative advice and develop close working relations with industry, other government departments, universities, standards-writing bodies and regulatory authorities in situations where expertise in materials and welding engineering is required.
In consultation with other CanmetMATERIALS scientists and stakeholders, the successful candidate will conduct scientific research leading to the development of technologies that will benefit Canadians and contribute to the delivery of CanmetMATERIALS’ mission in support of the mandate of Natural Resources Canada. Research will contribute to the economic and environmental success of Canadian industry, and to the quality of life of Canadians derived from the value-added use of minerals, metals and materials.

Graduation from a recognized post secondary institution with a PhD in natural sciences (includes physical sciences) or engineering related to the duties of the position, such as Welding Engineering, Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, or Chemical Engineering.
Productivity or recognition in scientific research as demonstrated by authorship and editorship of published reports, books, papers, patents, conference proceedings or other communications resulting from scientific research and development.
Experience in scientific research in welding focusing on microstructure and properties relationship and control, i.e. the candidate has personally developed or applied advanced welding techniques to materials innovations. Results have been published in theses or scientific literature.
Experience in collaborative research with universities, governments or science-based non-government organizations (provide specific bibliographic references).
Knowledge of the fundamentals of materials science and materials processing technologies.
Knowledge of welding and joining processes focusing on the relationships between microstructures and properties of welds specific to pipelines (oil & gas, hydrogen, CO2).
Knowledge of factors controlling the acceptability of welds.
Knowledge of materials microstructural characterization techniques.
Knowledge of codes and standards related to pipelines (oil & gas, hydrogen, and CO2) welding.
Ability to conceive and conduct original research projects to address scientific challenges or opportunities.
Ability to interpret complex scientific observations to develop models that explain materials performance.
Ability to communicate complex scientific subject matter both verbally and in writing.
Ability to lead multi-disciplinary research project teams.
Ability to develop applied research projects to address the needs of industrial clients.

Experience in an industrial setting pertaining to welding technology, design or qualification.

Knowledge of welding/materials issues and solutions to other industries, e.g. automotive, energy production, defence, etc.
Knowledge of coating, corrosion and environmental effects on the performance and integrity of the welded joint.
