Assessment accommodation

Suspension of vaccination requirement:

Effective June 20, 2022 the vaccination requirement for the Core Public Administration (CPA), including the RCMP, will be suspended. As of that date, employees of the CPA will no longer be required to be vaccinated as a condition of employment.

Duties

The incumbent will be involved in laboratory based projects that involve the application of molecular biology tools to samples from aquatic species (such as fish and invertebrates).

Work environment

This position will be located at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography (BIO). BIO is a multi-disciplinary, federal government institute with a focus on the science and management of the oceans. It is Canada’s largest centre for multi-disciplinary ocean research and houses science groups from DFO, NRCan (Natural Resources Canada), and ECCC (Environment and Climate Change Canada). Scientists at BIO perform targeted research to provide peer-reviewed advice and support to government decision making on a broad range of ocean topics. These topics include sovereignty, safety and security, environmental protection, the health of the oceans, safe and accessible waterways, the sustainable use of natural resources (fisheries, minerals, oil & gas) and the integrated management of large ocean management areas.

Intent of the process

The intent is to a staff one position in Dartmouth (NS). A pool will also be established and may be used for additional opportunities that may arise.

EDUCATION:

• Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a natural, physical or applied science with specialization in a field relevant to the duties of the position.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE:

• Experience conducting scientific work in one of the following areas of aquatic biology: fish population science, fish stock assessment, or fisheries productivity science.

• Experience conducting quantitative analyses and interpreting data using statistical analytical techniques or tools associated with biological studies, oceanography, or stock or ecosystem assessments.

• Experience contributing to the writing of scientific papers or technical documents.

• Experience using statistical software to analyze data with Matlab, R, SAS, SQL, S+, VB, C++, ADMB, or other scientific programming software.

• Experience in population dynamics modelling.

• Experience in quantitative analysis of ecological data related to population dynamic modeling.

Note: "Fish" includes finfish and invertebrates, and "aquatic" includes marine and freshwater species.
