Duties

The duties of the Conservation Manager are varied.

The incumbent is in charge of the delivery of a program of conservation treatment projects, activities and initiatives to enable current access by clients to Canada’s documentary heritage in analogue media. This includes activities related to conservation treatment for exhibitions, loans, tours, visits and pop-ups, requests from media, and other projects involving both internal and external clients and partners.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

→ Managing a team of over 15 employees within 4 distinct labs: photo, books, paper and paintings.
→ Managing a major program of conservation treatment and treatment development projects involving multiple media types, concurrent timelines, varied objectives, and both internal and external clients to enable current access to LAC holdings and to Canada’s documentary heritage.
→ Providing expert advice and recommendations and authoritative information on conservation program management and coordination, resource allocation, and operational priorities for current access to holdings.
→ Managing the human, financial, material, health/safety and technological resources of the section and contributing to the Division’s resource planning and priority setting.

EDUCATION:
A secondary school diploma or employer-approved alternatives (see Note).

Note:
The employer-approved alternatives to a secondary school diploma are:

- An acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE:
Significant* experience in managing human resources;

Recent** experience in managing financial resources;

Experience in building and maintaining working relationships with various groups of stakeholders;

Experience in providing advice and recommendations to senior management***.

*Significant experience is defined as the depth, breadth and diversity of experience normally acquired through performing a broad range of various and complex activities. It may include: supervision of staff; establishing priorities, work plans or performance objectives; conducting performance assessments and providing feedback.
**Recent is defined as experience acquired within the last two (2) years.
***Senior management" refers to the Director level or above.

EXPERIENCE (ASSET):
Experience in conservation treatment of cultural heritage material;

Experience in project management of conservation, preservation or collection care of cultural heritage material.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to work on the job site. The offices are located in Gatineau, QC.
Ability and willingness to travel on occasion;
Ability and willingness to do overtime on short notice on occasion.
