Duties

The Aquatic Science Biologist III positions at DFO are diverse in their duties and required skill sets as they contribute to the full range of DFO's core areas of research. In general terms, an Aquatic Science Biologist III employee is expected to: plan, conduct and lead field or laboratory activities; supervise support staff; present information and work results to stakeholders, develop quantitative models to analyze and interpret data; prepare and present reports in support of requests for advice; contribute to the peer review of reports and scientific publications; publish as lead author and co-authors of technical reports; and contribute to the scientific understanding of Canada's aquatic resources and ecosystems. They are expected to deliver programs to support decisions by the various management sectors that affect Canadians and the aquatic resources of Canada.

Work environment

We are located in Mont-Joli (Maurice-Lamontagne Institute) on the Estuary of the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The institute is an unique workplace where you can achieve your professional goals, while working with people who are passionate about their field.

Please note that the Maurice-Lamontagne Institute is a francophone work environment and the working language is French.

Employees are currently required to work in a hybrid work environment. As of today, it is expected that the candidate is available to perform his duties at the workplace, located at 850 Route de la Mer, Mont-Joli for a minimum of 3 days per week.

Intent of the process

A pool of qualified candidates will be established and may be used to staff permanent or temporary positions within the Science Branch. This process may be used to staff similar positions with various tenures within Fisheries and Oceans Canada.

We currently need to staff one indeterminate position, as follows:
-Aquatic Sciences Biologist at the Maurice Lamontagne Institute (1 indeterminate position)

EDUCATION
Post-graduate degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with specialization in a biological science, or in a field relevant to the position.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE
-At least one year of experience conducting scientific activities on vertebrates in one of the following areas: population science, stock assessment, habitat science, ecosystem sciences or ecology;

-At least one year of experience in conducting quantitative analyses and interpreting complex data using statistical analytical techniques or tools associated with biological and ecological studies;

-Experience in preparing and writing scientific papers or technical documents.

Information on language requirements

KNOWLEDGE
-Knowledge of vertebrate science sampling plans and methods;
-In-depth knowledge of statistical and mathematical techniques for data analysis in vertebrate science.

-Experience working in population dynamics, population dynamics model development and utilization of these models to evaluate the impacts of management or protection measures;

-Experience working in mammals science.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
-Have completed or accept to successfully complete a course on «Experimental Fish» in accordance with certification by the Animal Welfare Committee of the Maurice Lamontagne Institute, Fisheries and Oceans Canada;

-Have completed or accept to successfully complete a course to obtain a permit for possessing and acquiring fire arms;

-Accept and have the capacity to work aboard various platforms including helicopters, small planes, and boats of various sizes as required.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance

-Medical fitness in accordance with certification by Health Canada;
-Valid driving license;
-Be available to perform his duties at the Maurice Lamontagne Institute, 850 route de la Mer, Mont-Joli, QC.;
-Accept and be able to work at sea or in the field in remote or isolated environments and under primitive conditions (e.g. camping) for periods of up to 6 consecutive weeks and for periods that could exceed 10 weeks per year;
-Accept or be qualified to operate small vessels in accordance with certification by Transport Canada or accept to follow and succeed in acquiring this certificate.
