Duties

Prioritize, plan and execute laboratory millings in support of wheat and other grains quality assurance and research activities. Operate and maintain the Grain Research Laboratory milling equipment and ancillary processing equipment. Monitor the operation of milling equipment and instruments. Troubleshoot and perform minor repairs and adjustments to milling and processing equipment. Modify / optimize existing milling and processing equipment and procedures to increase throughput and improve characteristics of milling products. Perform various chemical and physical tests on grain and grain products to describe quality.

A pool of candidates may be created to staff similar positions with various linguistic profiles and tenures (indeterminate, specified term, acting, assignment, deployment, secondment).

EDUCATION
• Post-secondary degree or diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution in a field related to the position being staffed, or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or pertinent working experience.

*Note: An acceptable combination of education and training and experience is defined as a high school diploma with at least 5 consecutive years of training and/or laboratory experience within the past 10 years.

Related fields: Chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology, plant pathology, food science, environmental science or other specialization in a field relevant to the duties of the position.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE
• Experience with troubleshooting, repairing, and/or modifying mechanical equipment (e.g., changing bearings, drive belts, and parts on mechanical equipment)
• Experience with grain analysis and evaluation (physical and analytical tests) and/or grain processing

Recent* experience using computer programs for database management, spreadsheets, word-processing and preparation of reports.

*Recent is defined as within the last two years.

KNOWLEDGE
• Knowledge of different classes of Canadian wheat and cereal grains, milling characteristics, composition and properties of cereal grains.
• Knowledge of the principles used in milling and of various grain processing techniques.
• Knowledge of the theories and principles of tests used in wheat and durum wheat evaluation (analytical and processing).
• Knowledge of principles and practices of quality assurance and quality control in a laboratory.

• Experience with grain milling, grain fractionation and processing.
• Experience in drafting and maintaining standard operating procedures.
• Experience demonstrating and explaining lab operations.

• Ability and willingness to work in a fast-paced environment and perform tasks in a timely manner to meet deadlines.
• Ability and willingness to wear protective clothing and hearing protection.
• Ability and willingness to use of various power tools, (e.g., table saw, drill press, and other cutting tools), moving of heavy grinding rolls, and making repairs to belting, which present inherent possibility of injury.
• Ability and willingness to spend brief periods in awkward positions (e.g., bending or using stepladders when reaching into awkward places to access HVAC filters) resulting in physical stress and fatigue.
• Ability and willingness to maintain standing and/or sitting positions for extended periods.
• Ability and willingness to be expose to high noise levels (up to 90 db).
• Ability and willingness to be exposed to grain and flour dust. Known allergies must be controlled through the use of personal protective equipment and/or medication, and must not impinge upon the work to be performed.
• Ability and willingness to be exposed to and work with hazardous chemicals and laboratory equipment and to adherence to laboratory safety standards and procedures.
• Ability and willingness to occasional moving of samples of 20 kg or more.
• Availability and willingness to work overtime as required.
