Assessment accommodation

Duties

Provide behavioral interventions to the inmate population.

Work as part of an interdisciplinary team to establish, promote and maintain a therapeutic / supportive environment.

Deliver and supervise group and individual skills training sessions and related activities to assist women offenders in managing their mental health.

Provide support within the living environments to the inmates in their application of skills learned.

Work environment

The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) is the federal government agency responsible for administering sentences of a term of two years or more, as imposed by the court. CSC is responsible for managing institutions of various security levels and supervising offenders under conditional release in the community.

Nova institution for Women is a multi-level (minimum, medium, maximum) security facility. The work environment is a Women Offender Institution/Unit, which may include a Secure (maximum security), or Structured Living Environment and or an intermediate mental health environment. Working in these environments involve exposure to, and /or interactions with offenders whom may present as confrontational and antisocial. Staff often work in an environment that is unpredictable.

Intent of the process

A pool of qualified candidates will be established and will be used to staff immediate and future permanent or temporary vacancies. It may also be used to staff similar positions on a permanent or temporary basis within Correctional Service Canada in the Atlantic region.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

EDUCATION

Completion of a two year post-secondary diploma with specialization in one of the following areas: social work, behavioural science technology, social services work, mental health, addictions, psycho education; or in a field related to the duties of the position.

OR

An acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE

Experience intervening with women* in crisis
Experience working with people who experience mental health issues and/or problematic behaviours
* The term “women” includes those who identify as women, as well as people who are non-binary.

If you possess any of the following, your application must also clearly explain how you meet it (other qualifications)

EDUCATION

Bachelor’s degree in social work; sociology; psychology; education; psycho education or any other field related to the duties of the position

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE

Experience working with women* with mental health needs
Experience working with Indigenous women* or women* from other ethonocultural groups
Experience in offering treatment to clients using the Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT)
Experience in the application of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) based treatments
Experience working in a psychiatric or mental health facility
Experience working with women* offenders in a correctional environment (institutional or community)
Experience working with individuals who are at risk for self-injurious or suicidal behavior

We may assess the essential and asset qualifications using various assessment tools, such as, standardized tests, interviews, written tests (take home assignments or other), references or a combination of these or other assessment methods. Other sources of information (such as performance agreements, work samples, board member knowledge, etc.) may be used to assess the criteria identified on the Statement of Merit Criteria.

OTHER

An assignment, secondment, or acting appointment requires approval of your supervisor (applicable to internal candidates only).

Preference

Preference will be given to veterans first and then to Canadian citizens and permanent residents, with the exception of a job located in Nunavut, where Nunavut Inuit will be appointed first.
