Assessment accommodation

The Program’s team lead positions are based in Vancouver, British Columbia. Hybrid work arrangements are available; at least 1 day a week in the office is required.

If you are a dynamic and experienced leader interested in overseeing a highly collaborative process dedicated to the recovery and conservation of aquatic species at risk, look no further and apply to our BI04 (team lead) process. Our group is responsible for implementing the Species at Risk Program in the Pacific Region, covering British Columbia and Yukon. We work on species big and small – including Killer Whales, Pacific Salmon, White Sturgeon and a number of other species like the spectacular Giant Threespine Stickleback and aptly named Longspine Thornyhead. No day or process is the same. It is a great opportunity to lead a passionate and dedicated team and to work in collaboration with Indigenous groups, Wildlife Management Boards, provincial/territorial governments, and others to conserve and protect aquatic species at risk.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with specialization in a biological science;
Or
Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a natural, physical or applied science with specialization in a field relevant to the duties of the position.

Note:
The courses for the specialization must be acceptable and must have been taken at a recognized post-secondary institution, but not necessarily within a degree program in the required specialization.

Degree equivalency

Significant* experience working in conservation or management of species and ecosystems, in natural resource management or in environmental issues.

Significant* experience in preparing and delivering briefings and presentations which includes science-based advice and recommendations to management**

Significant* experience managing human and financial resources***

Significant* experience establishing relationships, consulting, engaging, or negotiating with at least two of the following partners: Indigenous groups, wildlife management boards or co-management bodies, academic institutions, government departments/organizations; industry, non-governmental organizations or the general public.

*Significant experience is required and is defined as depth and breadth of experience normally associated with the performance of the duties for a minimum of one (1) year on a full-time basis.

**Management is defined as manager level or above within the public service or equivalent level within the private sector.

***Candidates must clearly demonstrate that they have managed human resources and indicate the number of staff they supervised (direct and indirect reports). Some examples of managing human resources may include: assigning work, managing performance, developing resourcing plans, determining needs, approving training, etc. Candidates must also clearly demonstrate that they have managed financial resources and indicate the size of the budget(s).

Experience implementing the Species at Risk Act (e.g., undertaking listing processes, developing recovery documents, identifying critical habitat)

Experience in delivering operational programs with multiple internal and external partners, often with conflicting priorities or mandates.

Experience related to delivering a Grants and Contributions Program.

Experience engaging and collaborating with Indigenous groups and/or co-management agencies.

Knowledge of the Fisheries Act, Oceans Act, and other legislative and regulatory tools used to manage aquatic species and their habitat in Canada.

Knowledge of the biology, ecology, management, and conservation of aquatic species, aquatic bodies, and/or aquatic ecosystems.
