Duties

Coal Preparation Technologists at the Metallurgical Fuels Laboratory of CanmetENERGY-Ottawa work within a team to prepare metallurgical coal samples for testing. Daily duties include using forklifts and overhead cranes to move bulk quantities of coal samples throughout the facility, drying coal samples to required moisture levels, blending and crushing coal samples, and preparing samples for charging in pilot size moveable wall ovens (350 kg) and small scale (12 kg) sole-heated ovens. The work is labour intensive, with some processes requiring the use of shovels to transfer coal into 45-gallon drums. Other duties include assisting with charging the pilot ovens and pushing produced coke following carbonization heat treatment, splitting coal samples, performing bulk density measurements, preparing representative samples for analytical quality tests, maintaining clear and concise records/log books, and cleaning and vacuuming the work areas regularly. All employees are expected to follow standard operating procedures, work instructions, and health and safety procedures, including wearing Personal Protective Equipment.

CanmetENERGY is one of Canada's premier organizations in the field of energy science and technology. As a key research arm of Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), CanmetENERGY works with private and other public sector partners to develop and deploy leading-edge energy products and processes for virtually all sectors of the Canadian economy. The Metallurgical fuels Laboratory of CanmetENERGY is an internationally recognized test facilities for the assessment of coal and coke quality for metallurgical applications. The specialized facilities available at the Metallurgical Fuels Laboratory include pilot-scale coal handling equipment, complete petrographic, microscopic and image analysis systems for coal and coke, and pilot-scale pressure measuring moveable wall coke carbonization ovens and sole heated coke ovens. These facilities, utilized for developing improvements in the quality of cokes by the formulation of coal blends for cokemaking for coal/coke suppliers and steel producers, are complemented by experienced research staff.

Intent of the process

Candidates may be referred from this inventory for various positions based on the needs of the organization, asset qualifications, or random selection. The inventory will be updated every 90 days. If your application is part of the inventory, you will receive a system generated email notice in your applicant account 10 days before that period. The notice will ask you whether your application should continue to remain active for an additional 90 days. Failure to respond to the email will result in the inactivation of your application. You will need to reactivate your application to be considered for staffing opportunities.

The inclusion of your application into the inventory will depend on the responses provided to the questionnaire. The information you provide in the questionnaire must be true. Your résumé will be verified by Natural Resources Canada staff during the referral of your application to a hiring manager. You must ensure that all of the experience criteria you identify in the questionnaire are included in your résumé. If your résumé is selected for a process and your experience is not clearly demonstrated, your application may be rejected. Any false or fraudulent information will result in the rejection of your application.

A secondary school diploma or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.

Degree equivalency

Experience observing health and safety guidelines and procedures, and using Personal Protective Equipment.
Minimum of 6 months experience in handling and sampling of bulk solid materials.
Minimum of 6 months experience in keeping records in log books or computer.
Minimum of 6 months experience in maintaining and carrying out basic repair of apparatus and equipment for use in scientific projects or for industrial applications.
Experience in utilizing common hand and power tools for equipment set up or in the assembly of mechanical equipment and repair.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance

Able to work flexible hours, occasional overtime, and rotational shifts, including nights, evenings, weekends and designated holidays.
Able to wear personal protective equipment, in particular respirators, boots, helmets, visors, eye and hearing protection, thermal protection gear and cooling gear.
Able to lift 23 kg (50 lbs.) and to position and move heavy barrels (up to 200 kg) onto and off forklift trucks.
