The Canadian Conservation Institute (CCI) is one of the few governmental agencies around the world dedicated to heritage conservation. Working at CCI means working with a team of experienced conservation experts in conservation treatment, preventive conservation and conservation science, and with specialists in publications, communications and training. CCI staff work with their clients – primarily with heritage professionals and institutions (e.g. museums, libraries, archives, cultural centres) in Canada. They also maintain close connections with organizations and colleagues from around the world to collaborate on research projects or to share their knowledge at professional conferences.
The Canadian Conservation Institute (CCI) provides services for the preservation of heritage collections which is integral to historic architecture – collectively defined as "heritage interiors." CCI provides expert services in support of custodians of publicly accessible Canadian heritage interiors, as well as stewards of federal heritage real property buildings and inventories.
CCI also has a mandate to investigate the nature of heritage materials and the processes of deterioration of heritage collections. This involves investigation and research into:
- the nature and identity of heritage materials;
- architectural paint documentation;
- the technology and mechanisms of deterioration of heritage materials; and
- the causes of instability in building structures that have an impact on heritage art, artifacts and finishes.
CCI is currently part of a team working on the preservation of heritage character-defining elements, collections and interiors found throughout Canada's Parliament buildings. Canada's Parliamentary Precinct Branch of Public Services and Procurement Canada is leading the team's work.
CCI's current work on the Centre Block builds upon its input for the rehabilitation of the West and East Blocks, the Wellington Building, the Sir John A. Macdonald Building, and comprises of:
· investigations, surveys and technical analyses of original materials in heritage interior spaces;
· risk assessment, packing and transport as well as project management during construction; and
· investigation for conservation treatment of the special heritage rooms to be conserved and restored during the rehabilitation of Centre Block.
